About Us
Dartmoor National Park Authority works in partnership with local and national stakeholders to
conserve and enhance Dartmoor as a vibrant, living, working landscape and community teeming
with natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage.
We promote opportunities for the public to understand and enjoy the special qualities of
Dartmoor National Park, whilst also promoting the economic and social wellbeing of local
communities.
We are now looking for a Sector Ranger to join us on a full-time, permanent basis, working 37
hours per week.
The Role
As a Sector Ranger, you will work across the West of Dartmoor, acting as an ambassador and
ensuring everyone has access to and can look after and use the National Park through the
management of the Rights of Way network. A strong practical ability will be essential.
Undertaking visitor management and engagement, you will patrol common and access land,
providing advice and assistance to the public and, where appropriate, enforcing relevant
byelaws.
You will also contribute to and support activities that promote the special qualities of the
National Park through working with volunteers, Youth Rangers and by representing the Authority
at events, shows and Parish Councils.
Additionally, you will:
- Promote the work of the Authority with the local community and visitors
- Organise contractors and volunteers
- Recruit and manage Voluntary Wardens and volunteers
- Provide a point of contact and assist in the management of larger recreational events
- Manage public rights of way and access land

About You
To be considered as a Sector Ranger, you will need:
- Experience in countryside, access, recreation and visitor management
- Experience of Ranger duties
- Experience of managing and co-ordinating volunteers
- Experience using strimmers, chainsaws and handheld power tools
- Knowledge of countryside access legislation and countryside law
- Familiarity with Dartmoor and local geography
- Excellent communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills
- Proficiency in IT
- A degree, professional qualification or substantial experience in Countryside Management (or
similar relevant subject) - A full, valid driving licence
Please note, this role requires regular weekend and bank holiday work, as per the rota which
covers seven days per week. There will also be a requirement to work occasional evenings (e.g.
for attendance at Parish Council meetings).
