You will focus on semantic web techniques, including vocabularies and ontologies, to promote the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles across various digital assets, such as data, models, methods, and services. You’ll also be an advocate for these FAIR principles within UKCEH, the NERC Environmental Data Service, and the broader environmental science community.UKCEH is a leading independent, not-for-profit research institute that’s committed to recruiting talented people like you, helping you to progress your career and giving you the support you need to thrive.Your main responsibilities will include:Employing solutions to implement FAIR principles for a range of UKCEH digital assets using semantic web approachesEvaluating and extending our capabilities in the use of vocabularies and ontologies to promote a linked open data approach to describing digital assetsWorking with the EDS software developers to design and implement software and systems required for successful semantic web approachesAdvocating semantic web approaches both within and outside the organisation, including disseminating best practices through reports/publications and developing engagement activities for environmental scientistsWorking with the broader science community, including NERC’s Environmental Data Service to ensure UKCEH DRI activities align with external initiatives nationally and internationallyKeeping abreast of emerging trends and advancements in semantic technologies and knowledge representationFor the role of Semantic Data Specialist, we’re looking for somebody who has:A degree in an appropriate subject, as well as a PhD or equivalent relevant experienceKnowledge and experience of semantic technologies such as graph databases/ triple stores, RDF, OWL, SPARQLExperience in the use of semantic web approaches, including principles and practices to support the discovery, use and interoperability of digital assetsExperience of understanding complex data models and translating them into scalable solutionsInterest in Research Data Management and enhancing FAIR principles for digital assets in DRIAn ability to rapidly understand new systems, infrastructures and toolsThe ability to collaborate with others and present work clearly to a variety of audiences (including non-specialists)A strong desire to work collaboratively in a research and development environment on DRI for environmental scienceExperience of Agile software development processes (Desirable)Experienced in Python, R, Java and/or JavaScript (Desirable)Experience of Research Data Management frameworks/Data Commons (Desirable)Awareness of national and global data initiatives and projects (e.g., RDA, DataCite) (Desirable)Whilst we do invite applications from international candidates, we are currently unable to offer visa sponsorship for this position.If we’ve just described you, we’d love to meet, so apply now.
