Senior Clinical Fellow in Colorectal Surgery
British Medical Journal
The John Goligher Unit is run by twelve Consultant Colorectal Surgeons with sub-speciality interests in advanced and recurrent colorectal cancer, minimally-invasive and robotic surgery, pelvic floor surgery, abdominal wall reconstruction, complex inflammatory bowel disease and intestinal failure. Each year we offer four fellowships for senior trainees who have completed their general surgery training to CCT level or equivalent.Fellows can expect a broad programme of advanced training with the option of tailoring the year to focus on one or more subspecialties. The post is fixed term for a 12-month period. It is envisaged that the successful candidate will fulfil the training objectives of their fellowship within this period.Main duties of the jobFellows on the unit have already completed registrar/residency training (post-CCT or equivalent) and benefit from consultant-led training in the operating theatre. We expect the applicant to be experienced enough to make sound independent clinical judgements and to look after this complex group of patients on a day-to-day basis. They are also expected to supervise and teach the registrars and SHOs. The applicant will be expected to conduct rounds and clinics independently. They may also be asked to perform certain lists independently, appropriate for their level of experience. As part of the Senior Registrar (SR) rota, they will supervise and support the on-call Registrar with acute admissions, operating and referrals on non-resident rota Mon-Fri.As a large teaching hospital there are multiple opportunities for teaching and training. There are leadership and service improvement roles that can be picked up by fellows. The unit remains at the forefront of international research into colorectal disease and is supported by world class pathology, gastroenterology and radiology departments. Our academic University department, led by Professor David Jayne, has a large portfolio of both basic science and translational research projects and Fellows are encouraged (and supported) to publish at least one manuscript during the course of the year.About usThe unit is composed of twelve consultant surgeons (ten whole time equivalent), four senior fellows, five Y& H Deanery SpRs, three core trainees (CT), four foundation (FY1) trainees, advanced care practitioners (ACPs) and colorectal nurse specialists (CNS).THE LEEDS WAY VALUESOur values are part of what make us different from other trusts, so we see this as a strength, as well as a responsibility.
