The successful applicant will work as part of a team with this group of Consultants at Bristol Children’s Hospital. They will provide assistance in theatre, undertake a twice daily ward round and liaise with their Consultant regarding management decisions. They will attend outpatients and the clinical meetings. There is a daily 7.30am Consultant ward round. There is a Joint Neurosciences Meeting on a weekly basis. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to present at the Joint Neurosciences Meetings and undertake research projects. They will be expected to participate in the departmental audit programme. They will provide cover for Deanery trainees (NTNs) when they attend teaching sessions at North Bristol NHS Trust or the Deanery.Main duties of the jobPaediatric Neurosurgery Clinical Fellows (ST3+ level) are required based at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.We are the regional Paediatric Major Trauma Centre. We have one of only 2 intra-operative MRI suites for children in the UK and have a strong interest in paediatric neuro-oncological surgery. The service is based at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (BRHC) following transfer with other specialised services from North Bristol NHS Foundation Trust earlier this year. A ward with 16 beds is the main focus of activity with an infrastructure to include Outpatients, Theatres and Radiology- all Paediatric orientated.The out of hours commitment is a 1 in 6 non-resident on-call Rota. There are close links between the University of Bristol and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust with the National Institute for Health Research Biomedical Research Unit in Cardiovascular Disease based at the Bristol Heart Institute and the jointly funded Clinical Research Imaging Centre at St Michaels Hospital. Skills and Abilities
Essential

  • Ability to fulfil all the duties of the post including on-call commitments
  • Fluent in English
  • Prepared to be flexible in working patterns
  • Good communication skills
  • Good organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to organise own learning
  • Ability to attend cardiac arrests or other neurosurgical emergencies within reasonable timescale
  • Demonstrate experience in teaching undergraduates and postgraduates
  • Demonstrate cases

Desirable

  • Able to function successfully under pressure
  • Good oral and written presentation skills
  • Demonstrate experience of case presentation

Qualifications & Training
Essential

  • MB BS (or equivalent)
  • Full registration with the GMC
  • MRCS parts 1 & 2 (or equivalent)
  • ATLS provider

Knowledge & Experience
Essential

  • Completed neurosurgery training program in their country of origin, or, if in a current program have a letter from their current program director approving training period in another department or
  • Recent experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems & practices (or equivalent)
  • At least 6 months experience as SHO/ST1/2 in neurosurgery
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as SHO/ST1/2 (or equivalent)
  • Have completed core surgical training or equivalent in the UK and undertaken under 12 months of posts at ST3 level or higher
  • Evidence of understanding and application of knowledge of speciality
  • Willing to seek help from senior colleagues as appropriate.

Desirable

  • Special interest in neurosurgery or experience in associated field of neurosurgery
  • Demonstrable interest in paediatric Neurosurgery

Additional & Aptitudes
Essential

  • Must hold GMC registration with licence to practice
  • Public Sector Language Competency
  • 3 years of reference history
  • An understanding of the principles of clinical audit
  • Demonstrate interest in research

Desirable

  • Evidence of contribution to published research
  • Higher Degree (e.g. PhD)
  • To have completed an Audit Project
