Job summaryThe Department of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery is primarily based at Castle Hill Hospital and currently comprises of nine consultants. Hull has been designated a Specialist Upper GI Cancer comprising of Oesophago-gastric and Pancreatic resectional services and also a recognised centre for bariatric and complex benign surgery. It performs 60-70 major OG resectional cases and 50-60 major pancreatic and biliary resectional cases each year. Aside from these operations, the department also carries out major laparoscopic cases including: hiatus hernia/anti-reflux surgery, laparoscopic CBD explorations, adrenalectomies, achalasia surgery, and bariatric surgery. It is a nationally renowned training centre for minimally invasive surgery.
Main duties of the jobThe Department of Acute Surgery serves the people of Hull and East Riding which equates to a population of approximately 600,000 as well as providing tertiary services to 1.2m from Scarborough in North Yorkshire to Grimsby and Scunthorpe in North East and North Lincolnshire respectively There are approximately 3800 non-elective admissions annually. Emergency surgery is performed at Hull Royal Infirmary and the service currently has a daily theatre, 6 times a week with 46 emergency general surgery beds divided across 2 wards on the 6th floor as well as access to ITU/HDU facilities and the major trauma ward. The timetable is flexible but will mainly involve supporting the delivery of elective Upper GI activity, including rostered time in: outpatients, endoscopy (including diagnostic and therapeutic OGDs, and ERCPs), day case theatre and also inpatient theatre (including occasional robotics). There is opportunity to participate in a variety of MDTs including OG/HPB cancer, Reflux, Bariatric, Endocrine and Barrett’s MDTs. There is also an on-call aspect helping to provide emergency care in Hull Royal Infirmary 24 hours a day as well as a non-resident part covering the elective patients in Castle Hill. The timetable can be modified to reflect the special interests and expertise of the appointee with appropriate exposure to a chosen subspecialty if requested (OG resectional, Pancreas resectional or complex benign UGI).
