This strategic post offers an exceptional opportunity to lead and develop the public health research group at the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Trust (MLW). The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in advancing epidemiology and public health research in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with a specific focus on improving health outcomes in disadvantaged populations globally.We are seeking a qualified clinical consultant in epidemiology or public health with substantial experience in LMIC settings, who is passionate about research, translational science, and building capacity in early-career researchers.Key Areas of ResponsibilityResearch and Academic Development

  • Lead high-impact, internationally recognized research aligned with LSTM’s mission to improve global health outcomes.
  • Identify strategic research opportunities, secure competitive funding, and develop evidence-based interventions in public health.
  • Foster partnerships with LMIC institutions and global stakeholders to enhance research impact and capacity.
  • Support and mentor early-career researchers, promoting career progression and fostering a collaborative academic environment.

Leadership

  • Provide strategic leadership for the public health research group at MLW, fostering collaboration across LSTM’s global hubs in Malawi, Nepal, Kenya, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.
  • Champion the value and impact of public health research within MLW, LSTM, and among external partners.
  • Contribute to clinical sessions at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Malawi, where aligned with academic objectives.

Education

  • Lead the development and delivery of public health and epidemiology teaching within LSTM’s postgraduate education portfolio.
  • Collaborate with the Education Faculty and Technology Enhanced Learning team to embed innovation in curriculum design.
  • Support student recruitment and engagement, ensuring a high-quality learning experience for diverse student populations.

Resource Management and Governance

  • Manage financial, staffing, and other resources effectively to support the growth of the public health group.
  • Ensure all activities comply with MLW and LSTM governance, policies, and regulatory frameworks, including health and safety and safeguarding standards.

Candidate ProfileThe ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • A medical degree and postgraduate qualifications (Master’s or PhD) in public health, epidemiology, or a related field.
  • Substantial experience leading clinical and field research in LMIC settings.
  • A strong track record of securing competitive research funding and publishing high-impact research.
  • Proven leadership in research-intensive environments and experience building collaborative partnerships.
  • Expertise in postgraduate teaching, curriculum development, and student mentorship.
