Minimally invasive surgery has been in existence since 1980’s. In that time, great strides have been made in the procedures that can be performed by laparoscopy. Unfortunately, very little has been done in UK with respect to formalizing a fellowship training program which lays out the essential components and requirements for adequate training in this area of expertise.The Senior Clinical Fellow position will train one person each academic year. The objective will be to train individuals who are dedicated to a future practice in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) and hence broaden the base of teachers in MIS. This post will give the Fellow a large exposure to advanced laparoscopic procedures in the management of hepatobiliary, bariatric and upper GI diseases.The consultant surgeons who are involved in the training program in MIS are also responsible for the training of general surgical Junior Clinical Fellows. There should be no conflict between these two levels of trainees.Main duties of the jobThe fellow will spend one year in clinical training. During that year, he or she will be exposed to a wide variety of advanced laparoscopic procedures. It is expected that the fellow will be exposed to an excess of 200 advanced abdominal procedures. Also during this year the fellow will conduct clinical studies and participate in the collection of clinical research data. Job responsibilitiesThe Fellow will be expected to conduct clinical research under the direction of Professor Ameet Patel. The goal will be to present papers at meetings such as the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), and the World Congress of Endoscopic Surgery. Subsequent manuscripts that will be published in peer reviewed journals are expected. Attendance at a minimum of one major meeting per year is mandatory, but the fellow may present his or her work at as many meetings as abstracts are accepted. A higher degree is feasible depending on the needs of the individual.In addition to the research responsibilities there will be a clinical element to the position. This will involve clinics, cover of the senior clinical fellows, and emergency on call commitment (up to 40% of on call duties). You will be actively encouraged to teach the general surgical JCFs basic laparoscopic operative skills and supervising the F1s.Person Specification
