OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

 

I. Background

 

The Global Education Monitoring Report (GEM Report) is an editorially independent, authoritative, evidence-based annual report that monitors progress in education in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were adopted as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Report is funded by a group of governments, multilateral agencies and foundations, and published annually by UNESCO since 2002 to serve the international community. It is widely recognized as an indispensable technical and advocacy resource supporting the achievement of SDG 4, which aims to ensure “inclusive and equitable quality education” and promote “lifelong learning for all” by 2030. With its renewed mandate, established in the Incheon Declaration of the World Education Forum in May 2015, the annual GEM Report series identify effective education policies and analyses major education themes. 

 

II. Duties and responsibilities

 

Under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for Education (ADG/ED), the overall guidance of the GEM Report Director, the immediate supervision of the GEM Report Senior Project Officer (Communication) and the direct supervision of the GEM Report Project Officer (Publications), the Senior Desktop Publishing Assistant will provide comprehensive support to the GEM Report team in the design and production of high-quality reports and materials.

 

Desktop Publishing Support:

• Organize and coordinate desktop publishing workflows and tasks with internal clients, external graphic design agencies and partners to ensure the accurate and timely execution.
• Contribute to the strategic planning and ideation of GEM Report publications including conceptualizing covers and layouts.
• Deliver visually appealing and professional-looking reports, papers and brochures by utilizing industry-standard software and tools.
• Enforce strict adherence to established style guidelines, ensuring consistent formatting, style and branding across all GEM Report publications.
• Support the production of both print and digital versions of GEM Report publications.
• Stay updated with the latest desktop publishing trends and tools to continuously improve the overall quality and efficiency of the GEM Report production process.

 

Graphic Design:

• Design and produce engaging infographics, charts, and diagrams to enhance the visual representation of data and key messages.
• Coordinate with external service providers to develop visually appealing covers and layouts for GEM Report publications, ensuring implementation of relevant branding elements, logos, and visuals into the design materials.
• Provide technical guidance to GEM Report staff regarding desktop publishing software, tools, and the adoption of best practices.

Quality Assurance:

• Conduct meticulous proofreading of documents to ensure accuracy, clarity, and adherence to established guidelines.
• Conduct comprehensive quality checks on the final outputs, ensuring consistency and correctness in formatting and layout.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education

 

  • Completed secondary, technical, or vocational school. 

 

Work Experience

 

  • A minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in digital publishing, including desktop publishing, graphic design, copy-editing, proofreading and typographical layout or related area.
  • Demonstrated experience in web-based content management.
  • Demonstrated experience working with multilingual content, documents and/or publications. 

 

Skills and Competencies

 

  • Demonstrated proficiency in industry-standard desktop publishing software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
  • Knowledge of layout design, typesetting, and formatting for print and digital media.
  • Knowledge of best practices in visual communication and ability to create compelling visuals.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural team environment and interact with a wide range of partners with tact and discretion. 
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks with flexibility to adjust work schedules and priorities including delivering within tight deadline. 
  • Client-oriented and problem-solving attitude
  • Ability to work independently and with good judgement. 

 

Languages

 

  • Excellent knowledge of English and good working knowledge of French.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Languages

 

  • Knowledge of another official United Nations language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Spanish).
     

BENEFITS AND ENTITLEMENTS

UNESCO’s salaries consist of a basic salary and other benefits which may include if applicable: 30 days annual leave, family allowance, medical insurance, pension plan etc.

The approximate annual starting salary for this post is 48, 526 Euro €.
