The Wolfson Electron Microscope Suite (WEMS) at the University of Cambridge is seeking a highly skilled Senior Technician to join our dedicated team. This is a unique opportunity to work in a world-class facility supporting cutting-edge research in electron microscopy.Role Overview:As the Senior Electron Microscope Technician, you will take primary responsibility for the Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEMs) within the WEMS. You will ensure that these instruments, along with their ancillary equipment, are maintained at optimal performance levels. This role also involves delivering training and providing support to a diverse user base, including PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and external users. You will work as part of the WEMS team, which includes specialists in Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEMs) and Focused Ion Beam (FIB) systems, besides TEM, to support the overall objectives of the facility. Your duties will include coordinating training , ensuring facility compliance with health and safety policies, overseeing equipment maintenance, and supporting the installation and commissioning of new instruments and facility infrastructure.Key Responsibilities:
- Hands-on technical support for TEM users to help deliver high-quality research output. This can include providing analysis of specimens
- Manage and deliver training for new users, ensuring safe and effective operation of TEMs and related equipment
- Maintain and troubleshoot TEM instruments and ancillary equipment and manage implementation of service contracts with service engineers
- Manage laboratory consumables and equipment stocks to ensure smooth operation of the facility
- Development, maintenance and implementation of safety protocols, including risk assessments and X-ray safety.
Desirable qualifications and experience:
- A degree in a relevant scientific discipline or equivalent practical experience
- Proven experience in the operation and maintenance of electron microscopes, particularly TEMs, or strong potential and enthusiasm to fill this role
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks with precision and accuracy
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to provide clear and effective training to users
- Familiarity with health and safety regulations in a laboratory environment.
