Job intro
We are currently seeking an experienced senior GIS professional with leadership skills to contribute to
Gavia’s growing portfolio of BNG, renewable energy and linear infrastructure projects. We
envisage this position as acting as a technical lead for the GIS discipline across the various
environmental teams within Gavia Environmental.
Location
We are seeking to recruit this role to our London office. However, we could consider an
alternative base location (including Perth, Glasgow & Evesham) for an exceptional
candidate.
Essential knowledge & experience
To be successful in this role, we expect you would:
- hold a recognised qualification(s) in Geographic Information Systems or other related
disciplines at university, college/higher education level. - have 5-8 years’ experience and/ or an equivalent combination of education and
consultancy/practice-based experience. - have an understanding of environmental consultancy and experience across a range of
software packages and data output needs. - be able to use/process the outputs from AutoCAD.
- have strong cartographic skills, adhering to data standards.
- have demonstrable experience of working with a multidisciplinary team.
- be able to work in a fast-paced environment and able to set and manage deadlines and team
members. - be flexible and able to to work with internal teams and client teams across the UK.
Role responsibilities
This role will report to our Technical Director (Ecology – England) but will involved working
alongside all of our internal teams across the UK.
The core duties of the GIS Consultant post are as follows:
- To act as Point of Contact for all GIS work awarded to Gavia and be responsible both for
day-to-day liaison between GIS team and other GEL Consultants as well as clients. - To create, maintain and update mapping templates for use by other Gavia staff.
- To provide in house training and support for GIS users and other technical staff.
- To share conventions and GIS changes with other members of Gavia staff.
- Support mobile/tablet/web and other desk-based data handling and creation.
- Spatial and non-spatial data handling, creating and maintaining content in geodatabases,
following excellent data management principles. - Effectively manage available time and budget to ensure the timely completion of all
required GIS tasks. - Manage any risks and liability arising from GIS work, e.g. ensure that mapping data
licences are valid and in-date. - To contribute to tenders/proposals where significant GIS input is required, and to
proactively identify prospective clients in accordance with Gavia’s priorities. - Be responsible for obtaining clear instruction on the time available from other consultants
(including sub-contractors) for the completion of work and convey that budget/time information to all persons working on that GIS project if not yourself. - To continue to develop responsibility for reducing risks and minimising liability in
relation to GIS work, e.g. ensure that mapping data licences are in-date and valid for any
external mapping works being issued as a final output. - To deliver accurate and well-presented GIS figures and data analysis or reporting and QA
output from other GIS staff. - To contribute to GELs marketing activities, e.g. marketing campaigns and materials, press
releases, GIS mapping and imagery for website, X and Instagram posts, articles, identification
and attendance at suitable conferences and exhibitions, etc. - To contribute to tenders/proposals, and proactively identifying and contacting prospective
clients in accordance with priorities set by GEL’s Directors or Technical Directors. - Carry out geoprocessing, database and analysis tasks using coding pertinent to software
packages commonly used at GEL such as QGIS, QField, Coreo and AutoCAD. - Working within and setting good GIS standards and best practice.
- The GIS Consultant will work with their line manager to agree their own personal
performance objectives and identify training courses to attend and other activities to
undertake as part of his/her continuing Professional Development.
Salary & benefits
For a small SME, Gavia is able to offer an attractive salary. The salary associated with this
role will be dependant on your existing skills and experience. We work on a 40 hours per week
basis, and along with your base salary, we offer a range of other core benefits, including
