ABOUT THE ROLEWe seek to appoint a Senior Lecturer in Materials Science and Engineering on an Enhanced Research Career Pathway. Within the Materials Science and Engineering department, there is a diverse and dynamic range of research activities ranging from metallurgy and corrosion to polymers and photovoltaics. These reflect the close working relationship with industry, public stakeholders as well research funding bodies. The department has a vibrant undergraduate and post-graduate community with strong history of working with industry to deliver an accredited Materials Science and Engineering programme with a broad range of topics including materials for energy, physical metallurgy and ceramics. As all our courses are research-led and practice-driven, the successful applicant should be able to bring their research background into their teaching to enhance our students’ experience. Active participation in the Materials science and engineering community is a key requirement of the post.The Institute of Structural Materials (ISM) in Swansea is internationally recognised for its work in mechanical testing and, through collaborating with an associated test centre in Swansea, the Steels and Metals Institute (SAMI), has ambitious plans in the area of testing under hydrogen environments. The expertise of the teams at ISM & SAMI in mechanical properties combined with pre-existing infrastructure provides a unique opportunity to develop an internationally leading facility which will play a major role in materials evaluation for the hydrogen economy. Existing facilities include the ability to test under gaseous hydrogen and also under liquid nitrogen for cryogenic properties in a stepwise approach towards liquid hydrogen testing. The successful candidate will be supported as part of a welcoming and experienced academic team, enabling them to build a research group formed of postdoctoral and postgraduate researchers, with a focus on supporting UK industry including Roll-Royce plc, and developing high impact publications. The successful applicant will deliver departmentally relevant research but also interact strongly across the faculty through the Interdisciplinary Research Institute (IRI) in materials and manufacturing.The appointed postholder’s primary research focus will be on research excellence and is expected to result in world-leading publications, attraction of competitive funding and generation impact in the real world.ACADEMIC CAREER PATHWAYThe pathway for this post is Research.
