This is the job description for the Senior Lecturer Grade 9 level. Please note the role is available at a Lecturer Grade 7 and 8 level. Please refer to the separate lecturer Grade 7/8 job description and please indicate on your covering letter which level you are applying for.Job PurposeTo carry out high-quality research in microbiology that takes a One Health perspective studying viral, bacterial or fungal systems. Research interests could include but are not limited to host-pathogen interactions, pathogen epidemiology, anti-microbial resistance (AMR), microbial genomics, the development of novel antimicrobial agents and strategies, or any other area of microbiology with demonstrated relevance to animal/human health and a broader One Health context. To develop and contribute to interdisciplinary collaborations, secure external funding, publish high-impact research findings in peer-reviewed journals and supervise research students and staff. To deliver engaging lectures and design rigorous laboratory exercises in microbiology to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and in so doing foster their intellectual growth and scientific curiosity. By integrating research and teaching, provide undergraduate and post graduate students with a comprehensive understanding of the complexities of microbial systems, and preparing them to address current and emerging challenges in the field.Main Duties and Responsibilities1. Undertake a leading role in the development and implementation of individual and/or joint research projects of international standard, participating actively in the development of College/School research strategy in the area of One Health microbiology.2. Act as principal investigator or project leader on major research projects with a portfolio of research activity and publications of high quality and impact.3. Take a lead in major funding bids and related activities, including Knowledge Exchange, which develop and sustain support for the subject area and recognised excellence for the University.4. Undertake academic management and leadership roles and responsibilities, including contributions to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes offered by SBOHVM. In so doing, the job holder will ensure high quality course/programme administration, set and monitor standards and lead on the development of policy and practice across research and teaching teams (beyond subject/school level).5.Create and develop effective networks with students, veterinary clinicians and other staff across the University, as well as external stakeholders to oversee the embedding of key University priorities such as graduate attributes, professional requirements, work-related learning, transitions support, student mobility and quality enhancement within credit bearing and non-credit bearing activities.6. Lead the development of inclusive and innovative approaches to teaching, learning and assessment that recognise the needs of a diverse student cohort, taking appropriate responsibility for managing associated cultural changes and staff support and development.7. Regularly attend and participate in appropriate activities to effectively contribute to the subject specialism, through learned societies, professional bodies, broader review, and editorial processes. Disseminate research findings locally, nationally and internationally to enhance learning within the discipline and to represent the University externally.8. Supervise individual student projects at both postgraduate and undergraduate level to ensure their effective development and assisting with difficulties e.g. learning support/problems.9. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.10 Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.11. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.QualificationsEssential:A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) in microbiology or related disciplines with an extensive and established reputation in research and significant teaching experience within the subject area.Desirable:B1 Membership of a relevant professional body.Knowledge, Skills and ExperienceEssential:C1 Recognised expertise in microbial systems and pathogens (viruses, bacteria, fungi) relevant to animal health and One Health to develop new knowledge and understanding within the field.C2 Substantial track record of published research of international standard compatible with enhancing the School’s submission to the Research Excellence Framework (REF).C3 Established track record of successfully securing funding for research projects, as appropriate for the subject specialism.C4 Proven ability to plan and lead staff and efficiently deploy resources in support of major research and teaching activities.C5 Ability to disseminate conceptual and complex ideas to a wide variety of audiences to develop and promote understanding.C6 Ability to forge new and effective relationships with colleagues, internally and externally, to foster collaboration across the University and with colleagues in other institutions.C7 Demonstrated commitment to open research, as appropriate to the discipline, through open data, open code, open educational resources and practices that support replication.C8 Track record of student supervision and development/mentorship/coaching of early career academic colleagues in subject area/team.Desirable:D1 Proven track record of developing and devising teaching programmes, techniques and methods.D2 Experience in the delivery of consultancy or professional practice related to microbiology, epidemiology or AMR.Terms and ConditionsSalary will be Grade 7/8/9, £40,497 – £45,413/£49,559 – £57,422/£59,139 – £66,537 per annum.This post is full time and open ended.The University of Glasgow has a responsibility to ensure that all employees are eligible to live and work in the UK.
