We would like to invite applications for the post of Senior Clinical Fellow in Colorectal Surgery, based at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This post is for a Senior Trainee who has completed their General Surgery training to CCT level or equivalent (or are within 12 months of completion of CCT). More junior trainees will not be shortlisted.Fellows can expect a broad case mix including super-specialist and general colorectal surgery with a particular emphasis on IBD surgery including re-do IBD surgery, pouch surgery and minimally invasive approaches. The fellow will participate in the on-call rota at Specialty Registrar level (full shift, 1:10).Candidates who are unable, for personal reasons, to work full-time are eligible to apply and, if successful, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis, in consultation with consultant colleagues.For further information or to arrange an informal visit please contact: Professor L Hancock contact phone 0161 291 6655.Main duties of the jobThe fellow will benefit from consultant-led training in the operating theatre. However, the successful applicant will be an experienced clinician and is expected to be able to make independent clinical decisions and care for surgical patients on a daily basis. Consequently, they will be expected to lead ward rounds, initiate changes in patient management and communicate with patients, their families and the wider surgical team. They will participate in out-patient clinic sessions, theatre lists and teach foundation doctors/medical students as required. They will present patients and attend the IBD MDT and act as a key liaison team member between the Gastroenterology and Surgical Teams.About usMFT is one of the largest NHS Trust In England with a turnover of £2.6bn & is on a different scale than most other NHS Trusts. Job responsibilitiesTo provide a broad programme of advanced training in colorectal surgery with an emphasis on Inflammatory Bowel Disease Surgery. The post is fixed term for a 12-month period.Applicants should possess FRCS or equivalent and must be fully registered (or eligible for full registration) with the GMC with Licence to Practise. Applicants must be senior trainees who have completed their General Surgery training to CCT level or equivalent (or are within 12 months of completion of CCT). Qualifications
Essential

  • FRCS (or equivalent)
  • Certificate of completion of training in general/colorectal surgery (CCT) or within 12 months prior to CCT

Desirable

  • Higher degree – PhD, MD, MBA
  • Membership of relevant professional societies (eg ACPGBI, ASGBI, ESCP, ECCO)

  • Full registration with GMC with current licence to practice
  • Eligibility to work in UK

Clinical Knowledge and Expertise
Essential

  • Demonstrates appropriate technical and clinical competence and evidence of diagnostic skills and clinical judgment
  • Competent to undertake General Surgical on calls at registrar level
  • Competent in general laparoscopic surgery
  • Experience of supervising and teaching FY and core surgical trainees
  • Evidence of involvement in clinical research

Desirable

  • Teaching qualifications
  • Up to date GCP training
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals

Essential

  • Ability to work within and lead a team
  • Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other individuals
  • Awareness of own limitations and when to ask for help
  • Capacity to manage time and prioritise workload
  • Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.

  • Motivated individual, ready to lead a team of middle and junior grade doctors
