The salary for this role is £54,376 (inclusive of a Market Premium Payment (MPP)), and onsite working is expected for 3 days each week.Job DescriptionThis role can be based at can any of the following sites: Culham, Oxfordshire.This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions.The RoleAre you looking for an exciting opportunity to make a difference? Join our team and contribute to the future of fusion energy. As Senior Nuclear Analyst, you will play a pivotal role, utilizing your experience with radiation transport modelling and inventory calculations to deliver high complexity tasks independently and/or through supervision of a small team (typically up to 5.0 FTE). You will also contribute to and drive code development needs to support nuclear analysis within the Applied Radiation Technology group. You will also be using strong relationships built within FT and across UKAEA to exploit business and other internal opportunities, defining and deploying short-to-medium term collaborative projects.Additional Responsibilities:

  • Building and developing strong relationships with external stakeholders, including academic collaborators and industrial end users, to understand commercial and other external collaboration opportunities.
  • Ensuring appropriate research, analysis, and evaluation tools are used by staff to assess and develop engineering solutions in complex and representative environments.
  • Preparing and/or review reports and documentation, and present research findings through appropriate meetings and forums.
  • Working with scientists and engineers to understand end-user requirements and, where required, develop/deliver test facilities.
  • Maintaining timely and clear communication about progress.
  • Contributing to improving best practices and quality standards within the team and across the organisation.
  • Working with external collaborators e.g. universities, public sector research establishments, and industry to complement UKAEA’s internal capability, access additional expert knowledge, and facilitate new project proposals.
  • Ensuring the development of research capability by mentoring, coaching, and providing technical guidance to staff, students, secondees and other team members.

  • Working in accordance with UKAEA policy and undertake any other reasonable tasks or duties requested by Management.
  • The appointee may be required to manage budgets allocated to their specific tasks. Where leading small team projects, they may also be required to approve procurement requests and timesheets on behalf of team members.
  • When defining work in the short term, the appointee must produce and secure defensible budget estimates and inform relevant parties of any deviations from this budget in a timely fashion.

QualificationsEssential Requirements:

  • PhD in a STEM-related discipline, or similar level of experience in a structured research environment.
  • Multiple years’ experience with the use of radiation transport codes (e.g., MCNP/OpenMC) and inventory codes (e.g., FISPACT-II) to perform detailed nuclear analysis.
  • Multiple years’ experience working in a technology-driven field.
  • Appetite to learn, research, investigate and tackle new challenges.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and communicate effectively in both technical and non-technical terms.
  • Ability to plan and prioritise workload.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Knowledge and experience with nuclear physics
  • Knowledge and experience with scientific programming and scripting (e.g., Fortran, python scripting)
  • Knowledge and experience of Linux operating systems, parallel computing (e.g. MPI and OpenMP) and high-performance computing
  • Knowledge and experience of magnetic confinement fusion, and of working in the fusion industry.
  • Knowledge and experience of CAD modelling software/tools
