Senior Research Engineer – Distributed Data Sharing and AI PlatformsThe Bristol Research & Innovation Laboratory (BRIL) of Toshiba Europe Ltd. is at the cutting-edge of wireless and networking systems, artificial intelligence, and digital technologies research. Today, BRIL continues to make ground-breaking advances in emerging areas and creates technologies that work toward a more sustainable environment, ensuring Toshiba has the capabilities to adhere to its long-standing statement of being “Committed to People, Committed to the Future.” BRIL has a strong track record of leading and participating in UK/EU-funded projects and standardization activities.We are seeking an exceptional candidate to join our dynamic team as a Senior Research Engineer to lead the development of next generation of distributed data sharing and integration platforms. This role focuses on innovative solutions leveraging cloud and edge technologies, enhancing data connectors, and pushing the boundaries of data integration and control planes. You will play a pivotal role in proposing novel concepts and creating proof-of-concept prototypes and exploring advancements in privacy, trustworthiness, cross-domain data sharing and distributed AI architectures.Responsibilities:

  • Lead research and development of novel approaches for cross-domain data sharing, AI, and digital integration platforms.
  • Develop and evaluate proof-of-concept implementations to enhance existing data sharing and integration solutions.
  • Publish research findings in top-tier conferences and journals.
  • Collaborate with world-renowned researchers through academic and industrial partnerships, as well as with engineers and researchers across other Toshiba units.

Key Qualifications:

  • PhD or MSc (or equivalent experience) in computer science specialised on data sharing platforms, distributed databases, AI, or a related field (3 to 5 year post-doctoral or industrial experience is a plus).
  • Deep understanding of data sharing fundamentals, including data security, privacy, and trustworthiness.
  • Strong system engineering experience.
  • Proven track record of publications in major conferences and journals.
  • Self-motivated with excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge and experience with standardization activities would be a plus.
  • Experience in patent applications and intellectual property management is desirable.

Required Skills:

  • Familiarity with data sharing standards and architectures, including data interoperability, digital integration, and digital twin technologies (e.g. IDSA dataspace connector, Eclipse data connector, and Asset Administration Shell (AAS)).
  • Experience in externally funded projects (including European), independent research within a team, and proven ability to build collaborations (desirable).
  • Proficient in programming with Java and SQL and testing using open-source tools.
  • Proficiency with Kubernetes (K8S, K3S), API management, and integration platforms.
  • Experience with service meshes (e.g., Istio, Consul) and distributed ledger technology (DLT) such as Hyperledger Fabric.
  • Knowledge of data and identity management concepts and solutions.
  • Understanding of database technologies like PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and data analytics using cloud services.
