About us The mission of the UCL GOS Institute of Child Health is to maximise and advocate for the holistic health of all children, young people and the adults they will become, through world-class research, education and public engagement. The UCL GOS ICH, together with its clinical partner Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, forms the largest concentration of children’s health research outside North America. The 2024-29 GOS ICH strategy focuses on its five scientific programmes. GOS ICH generates the funding for our research by setting out our proposals in high quality applications to public, charitable and industrial funding bodies and disseminates the results of our research by publication in the medical and scientific literature, to clinicians, policy makers and the wider public. GOS ICH holds an Athena SWAN Charter Gold Award.About the role The successful candidate will be expected to both line manage and carry out their own research on candidate therapeutics for dermatological diseases. They will derive primary cultures of various cell types from patient biopsies received from the clinic for preclinical investigations. They will prepare and treat patient skin cells and animal models with candidate therapeutics before investigating the effects using histological and molecular techniques. They will be expected to generate, analyse, and present scientific findings from the work undertaken to a broad range of audiences, both internal and external to UCL. The candidate will join a research group with a strong focus on driving preclinical research towards the clinic. Informal enquiries regarding the vacancy can be made by email to Jane White (jane.white@crick.ac.uk)About you The successful applicant should have a PhD in Biomedical Sciences or a related subject and have very extensive postdoctoral experience working in a research laboratory focused on molecular genetics and molecular biology. The candidate will have completed PIL A, B & C training for mouse research and have years of practical experience in murine research. The successful candidate will have experience line managing more junior laboratory research staff including independently undertaking their annual appraisals, and will have official supervisory experience for PhD students at least at secondary supervisor level. They will have experience drafting and amending Home Office animal research project licenses. The successful candidate will be very experienced in handling clinical samples for the derivation and culture of primary skin cells, and specific experience of culture of melanocytes, keratinocytes, and endothelial cells will be highly desirable. They will have knowledge of the chemistry of lipid nanoparticles for intradermal delivery into mice and biopsies from human patients, and ideally will have experience in working with lipid nanoparticles.
