About usThe Department of Neurodegenerative Disease is recognised as internationally leading in the study of neurodegenerative diseases causing dementia and related disorders.The Genetic Therapy Accelerator Centre (GTAC) is located in the Department. The mission of this new Centre is to embed translational research into the basic research and clinical activities of the Queen Square Institute of Neurology. The Centre combines laboratory and clinical expertise focused on neuromuscular and neurological disorders, their mechanisms of disease and includes cutting-edge RNA and AAV gene therapy expertise. The Centre fosters cross-institutional collaborations and facilitate RNA and gene therapy programs.About the roleWe are seeking a highly motivated and talented Senior Research Fellow to join the GTAC Laboratory under the direction of Professor Francesco Muntoni.You will work on building oligonucleotide therapeutics discovery in the neurological and neuromuscular field and work independently designing and implementing scientific strategies relating to research and development of antisense oligonucleotide (ASOs). Specifically, you will be involved in projects aiming at achieving targeted ASO delivery in different organs/cells.You will play a key role, both as a supervisor and through direct participation in laboratory activities, in contributing to multiple projects, which are aimed at developing RNA-targeted delivery in the brain, RNA-targeted delivery in fibroblasts, and identifying homing peptides in fibroblasts using phage display technology.Your role will encompass overseeing projects, providing guidance and support to team members, and actively contributing to laboratory activities across various research initiatives.The post is available from 18 July 2024. This is to undertake specific maternity cover, the duration of which is dependent upon completion of the cover, return of the post holder, or cessation of the funding, whichever is the soonest. In the first instance the cover is estimated to be for until 23 January 2025.If you need reasonable adjustments or a more accessible format to apply for this job online, or have any queries regarding the application process, please contact the Institute of Neurology HR Team ( ).Informal enquiries regarding the role can be addressed to Professor Francesco Muntoni ( ).A full job description and person specification for this role can be accessed below.About youYou will have a PhD in relevant life science discipline and significant postdoctoral experience with strong track record of scientific contribution, including peer-reviewed first author publications and presentations at major conferences.Extensive expertise and knowledge of RNA, antisense oligonucleotides design, chemistry knowledge on peptide synthesis and peptide-ASO conjugation methods, cell cultures, phage display, and molecular biology techniques are also essential to this role, along with strong communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.This role meets the eligibility requirements for a skilled worker certificate of sponsorship or a global talent visa under UK Visas and Immigration legislation.
