About us The MRC LHA. The mission of the Unit is to identify biological and social factors that affect lifelong health, ageing and the development of chronic disease, and to use findings to design and test interventions that enhance healthy ageing. The MRC LHA is part of the Department of Population Science and Experimental Medicine (PSEM), in the UCL Institute of Cardiovascular Science (ICS), forming part of the UCL Faculty of Population Health Sciences (FPHS).Division of Psychiatry (DoP). The DoP is within the Faculty of Brain Sciences and is a centre of excellence in Mental Health research. The DoP’s aim is to contribute to the improvement of mental health through research and education. It also addresses clinical problems in order to achieve benefits for patients and public health, using insights from basic science.About the role We are advertising an exciting 3 year postdoctoral position in epidemiology/data science, focusing on understanding how and when apolipoprotein E (apoE) influences the development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD).The post holder will primarily use metabolomic, proteomic, genetic and biomedical data from a series of longstanding cohorts, including half a million participants of UK Biobank, and eight decades of data collected by the 1946 British Birth Cohort (coordinated from the MRC LHA) and its neurological sub-study Insight 46. The research will include use of novel dementia fluid- and neuroimaging-based biomarkers. Analyses will be multi-faceted and involve conventional association analyses alongside genetic epidemiological methods (such as Mendelian randomisation) to strengthen knowledge of the relationships between apoE, circulating molecular analytes and AD.There will also be scope to contribute to, or develop your own, research projects within the wider remit of our research units.The post is funded for 3 years. Appointment will be made on Grade 7 (£42,099 – £50,585 p.a. including London Allowance) or Grade 8 p38 (£51,474 only p.a. including London Allowance) subject to experience. An appointment cannot be made above G8 point 38.About you The candidate will have a PhD or equivalent work experience in epidemiology, biostatistics, bioinformatics/data science or a related population health science. If working towards a PhD, they can be close to completion of this degree. If a PhD is not yet awarded at the start date, appointment will be at Research Assistant grade 6B £37,332 – £39,980 inclusive of London Weighting per annum, with payment at grade 7 backdated to the date of submission of the final PhD thesis.The candidate is expected to have a wealth of past experience using data from population-based cohorts or equivalent experience (e.g. statistical genetics). Experience of using complex data from genomics or -omics platforms is desirable, and essential for appointment at grade 8. Knowledge of and enthusiasm for Alzheimer’s disease research is also desired. Experience of publishing empirical research findings. Excellent analytic skills, including statistical analysis and data handling. Evidence of proficiency in relevant computer packages for quantitative data analyses (e.g. Stata, R, Python) are also expected.What we offer • 41 Days holiday (27 days annual leave 8 bank holiday and 6 closure days)
