Senior Research Nurse
University of Manchester
This is Research Nurse Post will support a new study which will come under the Children and Young People’s (CYP) Theme of the Mental Health Mission. The Mental Health Mission will allow to researchers test and trial cutting-edge interventions for patients with mental health conditions. The role involves working alongside clinical and academic researchers within the University of Manchester, other Universities and the NHS, as well as working directly with study participants and their families. The post-holder will support study development, writing up of the research protocol, obtaining ethics and other governance approvals, set-up and study delivery at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (involving recruitment of CYP into the study, administering the biomarker test battery and collection the data for analyses). They will also take the lead on processing and analyses of study data, lead and collaborate on the write-up of publications from the study, present at departmental seminars, external meetings, national and international conferences and contribute to the future of this research programme. The proposed project will build on the ongoing MEK inhibitors (MEKi) trial in children with Neurofibromatosis 1(NF1) to test the sensitivity/applicability of our biomarker battery. NF1 is a rare genetic condition which is associated with autism, ADHD and mental health difficulties. There is an existing NHS pathway for the use of MEKi for CYP. MEKi have shown remarkable efficacy in the treatment of plexiform neurofibromas, and preliminary evidence suggests a positive effect on learning(PMID: 34377779). The MEKi study in NF1 provides an opportunity to test the feasibility of the administration of the biomarker battery, and test whether the biomarker battery is sensitive to change. The children on MEKi will be managed by their existing NHS clinical teams without the burden falling on the CYP research nurses. Once the feasibility of the biomarker battery is established in this study, it will be used in other CYP drug trials. The research nurse will be trained in the delivery of the biomarker battery by our collaborators at Birkbeck College. The training will include administration of the battery- including application of the EEG hat, running the cognitive behavioural scripts, ensuring the reliability of the data. The research nurse will work with the internationally leading team at Birbeck (led by Professor Emily Jones) to use these measures. They will be supervised by Dr Shruti Garg and Professor Jonathan Green. Additional training will include participant recruitment, PPIE in collaboration with charity partner Nerve Tumours UK. The test battery will be administered both in clinic and home settings. It will be important for the applicant to be able and willing to travel between different locations. The applicant may need to spend a 2-4 weeks at our collaborator lab (Birkbeck) in order to be trained up in the use of the biomarker battery.Essential attributes of the candidate should include current NMC registration, specialist mental health knowledge, extensive clinical research experience, including experience of writing/ contributing to study documents and experience of data analysis. What you will get in return:
