CRUK Scotland Institute
About usThe CRUK Scotland Institute is a cancer research institute, situated in Glasgow with approximately 250 researchers split across 30 research groups consisting of PIs, postdoctoral scientists, PhD students and scientific officers. It is one of Europe’s leading cancer research centres, supporting cutting-edge work into the molecular mechanisms of cancer development. As well as core support from Cancer Research UK, the Institute also receives an additional third of its total income from external grants and industry collaborations. It has an excellent reputation for fundamental cancer research, including world-class metabolism studies and renowned in vivo modelling of tumour growth and metastasis. Its research ethos is about excellence, honesty, openness, accountability and
integrity.Position outlineWe currently have an exciting opportunity with a vacancy for a Senior Scientific Officer in our Transgenic Technologies lab. The primary role of this position will be to support state-of the-art creation of genetically engineered in vivo cancer models designed for discovery research. You will be expected to work as part of a collaborative team, conducting procedures required for the generation of new transgenic cancer models. New cancer models will be created using a combination of CRISPR genome editing and gene targeting in embryonic stem (ES) cells. This will require the successful applicant to contribute to carrying out a variety of embryo manipulation techniques including microinjection, in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and cryopreservation. This role may also involve mammalian cell culture, molecular analysis using techniques such as PCR, and colony management. You should be highly motivated and have good communication and organisational skills, being able to work both independently and in close collaboration with other team members involved with the transgenic projects. A flexible approach to your working pattern is necessary as there may be some weekend work required as part of this role. You will possess a Bachelors or Masters degree in genetics or similar and have a good understanding of gene targeting and genome editing. Previous experience of pre-implantation embryo handling would be a significant advantage, however, we can provide the necessary training for candidates who can demonstrate some lab experience, great attention to detail and the capability to perform intricate procedures.
