Job Opportunity: Senior Scientific OfficerLocation: Clare House, Belfast
Pay Rate: £21.99 per hour (Paid Weekly)
Length of Assignment: Minimum 6 Months
Start Date: ASAPJob Duties:Scientific evidence is critical in addressing climate change and supporting the Climate Change Act (Northern Ireland) 2022.The Senior Scientific Officer (SScO) will join the Climate Action Plan Sector Liaison Branch, contributing to the development, management, and governance of Northern Ireland’s first Climate Action Plan (CAP).Key Responsibilities:
- Policy & Research: Analyze existing policies, identify opportunities for new technologies, innovations, and policy development to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- Expert Advice: Provide sound scientific advice on climate change issues and priorities.
- Cross-Sector Engagement: Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including senior management and all NICS departments.
- Reporting & Briefing: Deliver written reports, briefings, and presentations to DAERA senior managers.
Desired Experience & Qualifications:Experience in stakeholder engagement, building relationships, and influencing senior officials.
Proven ability to lead, plan, and manage complex projects.
Strong analytical skills to support policy recommendations and strategic decision-making.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including presenting to senior management.Essential Experience & Qualifications:Qualifications:A 2:1 Honours Degree in a scientific discipline relevant to DAERA’s work, such as:
- Agricultural Science
- Animal Health & Welfare
- Food Science
- Environmental Science
- Rural Affairs
At least two years post-qualification experience (within the last eight years) in providing science-based advice for environmental policy development, regulation, or research & evidence.Post-qualification experience may include relevant postgraduate or postdoctoral research.Essential Experience:Researching & analyzing scientific developments, effectively communicating findings.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Proven ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders.
Experience working across teams, influencing both internal and external partners.
