We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative Senior Scientist to join our Precision Disease Model team. In this role, you will leverage your deep expertise in stem cell differentiation and molecular biology to develop complex disease-relevant cellular models and assays. You will collaborate closely with interdisciplinary research teams, including experts in functional genomics, drug discovery, bioinformatics, and various disease areas, to translate scientific discoveries into groundbreaking therapeutics. Responsibilities:

• Lead technology development projects focused on creating in vitro disease models for various genetic diseases.
• Develop effective methodologies for transgene expression, including inducible expression and genomic safe harbour strategies.
• Establish and refine protocols for differentiating patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to disease-relevant cell types using directed differentiation and forward programming approaches.
• Design and implement molecular and phenotypic assays (e.g. omics, high content imaging, mono- and co-culture assays) to characterise in vitro disease models and validate targets.
• Collaborate with functional genomics and compound profiling teams to develop high-throughput screening methods in precision disease models.
• Stay up to date with advancements in stem cell and genome editing technologies through literature reviews, conference attendance, and engagement with external experts.
• Analyse experimental data, troubleshoot issues, and deliver high-quality data packages and reports.
• Lead discussions and present data at internal and external meetings, including with academic and commercial parties, to facilitate project progression.

Qualifications

• PhD in cell biology or a related field with at least 4 years of postdoctoral or equivalent biopharma experience.
• Proven track record in creating and applying stem cell-derived cell models for disease modelling.
• Extensive experience and knowledge in mammalian cell culture and cell biology, including cell engineering, flow cytometry and immunofluorescence microscopy.
• Hands-on experience with genome editing techniques, such as CRISPR-Cas9, base editing, prime editing, PiggyBAC transposition and lentiviral transduction.
• Broad expertise in molecular biology techniques, including plasmid design, molecular cloning, DNA/RNA/protein extractions, quantitative PCR, NGS and western blotting.
• Competence in data analysis software, including Graphpad, Excel and FlowJo.
• Self-starter with strong planning and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent team collaboration, communication, and presentation skills.
• Adaptable, with the ability to thrive in an empowering work environment.
• Proven experience in coaching and mentoring scientists, fostering a collaborative and productive team environment.
• Occasional weekend tissue culture work is required.
• This role will require you to work from our brand-new state-of-the-art offices and labs situated in Babraham Research Campus, South Cambridge.

Desirable experience

• Familiarity with drug discovery processes and therapeutic development for genetic diseases.
• Project leadership and/or people management experience.
• Experience in high content imaging or multi-electrode array electrophysiology.
• Proficiency in bioinformatics and image analysis software.
