Working here means being results-oriented and working together to make the impossible a reality. We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Protein-Protein Interactions Expert to join our team at AstraZeneca. The successful candidate will be responsible for using Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) and other pioneering techniques to study and characterize protein-protein interactions, contributing to the advancement of our drug discovery and development programs. In this role (Senior Scientist) you will be involved in protein-protein interactions assay development, characterisation of biologics molecules and will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in a primarily lab-based role.Biologics Engineering Function in the UK is based at our new state-of-the-art Discovery Centre (DISC) located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.Biologics Engineering is responsible for the discovery and optimisation of biological candidate drugs to support all therapy area drug discovery pipelines and for the development of in-house biologics discovery platforms and novel drug modalities to support future drug discovery efforts. We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Scientist to support our biologics discovery pipeline and provide protein affinity and biophysical characterisation expertise to support drug discovery and technology development projects across all therapeutic areas at AstraZeneca. This primarily lab-based role involves working as part of a multi-disciplinary team involved in production and characterisation of biologics, interacting with multiple departments (e.g., the therapy areas and Data Science & Artificial Intelligence). If you are passionate about unravelling the complexities of protein-protein interactions and are eager to contribute to the development of life-changing therapeutics, we would love to hear from you. Please submit your CV and a cover letter detailing your relevant experience and expertise.Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and measure the affinity of protein-protein interactions via surface, solution and cell-based methods e.g. using Biacore, Carterra, KinExA and LigandTracer instruments, to support the characterisation of therapeutic molecules.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental data to provide insights into the molecular mechanisms of protein-protein interactions.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support drug discovery projects by providing expertise in protein-protein interactions.
  • Stay abreast of the latest scientific and technological advancements in the field of protein-protein interactions and contribute to the implementation of new techniques and methodologies.

Essential Requirements:

  • PhD with relevant experience or BSc/higher degree with equivalent lab-based experience.
  • Hands-on experience designing and determining affinity measurements of protein-protein interactions via surface, and solution methods e.g., Biacore, and Carterra, as well as the analysis of large data sets.
  • Extensive experience of conducting protein chemical modifications and biophysical protein characterisation by e.g. SDS-PAGE, Western blotting and HPLC-SEC.
  • Excellent understanding of the theoretical concepts of molecular interactions and applying these to experimental design in support of drug and technology projects.
  • Ability to provide solutions to a variety of complex problems e.g., able to troubleshoot affinity determinations from complex interactions.
  • Ability to optimize protocols, troubleshoot, interpret experimental results/data, and maintain accurate, high quality and up-to-date experimental records.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and with an ability to quickly learn and embrace new technologies.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Experience with other biophysical characterisation techniques, such as BLI (Octet), KinExA, LigandTracer, MST and mass spectrometry.
  • Experience with molecular biology, protein purification and cell culture techniques
  • Experience working in a high-throughput environment, as well as using high-throughput automation and liquid-handling systems e.g., Hamilton Robotics liquid handlers.
