Position description
As part of the Communications & Outreach Department based in our Brussels headquarters, the Senior Social Media Officer is responsible for creating and disseminating engaging digital content aimed at promoting International Crisis Group’s publications, advocacy and online events, and strengthening our brand recognition. The Senior Social Media Officer will also monitor the organisation’s social media channels and traffic, provide analytics and regular reports, seek out new social media avenues and opportunities, upload content to the website, stay up-to-date with current technologies and trends in social media and support the communications team as needed. The role will be based in Brussels, Belgium.
Responsibilities:

Day-to-day management of Crisis Group’s social media platforms, including X/Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, BlueSky, WhatsApp and other relevant platforms;

Draft and oversee production of content for Crisis Group’s social media channels;

Work with the visual team to ensure Crisis Group’s online content is dynamic, visually appealing, regularly refreshed and targeted to reach various audiences effectively;

Ensure the timely dissemination of key outputs and messages in various compelling formats;

Coordinate the production and supervise the release of social media content from Crisis Group’s regional hubs (Asia, Africa, LatAm, ECA and MENA) in coordination with the relevant regional comms officer;

Draft online media and Crisis Group events strategies;

Draft and help execute social media content strategies for high-profile members of the organisation and deliver tailored social media trainings;

Monitor, analyse, and report on the performance of social media, using Google Analytics, Meltwater Engage, Tweetdeck and other tools;

Monitor developments in digital and online media, and propose new ideas for Crisis Group to maintain an active and engaged digital presence;

Coordinate the organisation’s social media response team to handle online incidents;

Support strategic decision-making related to the organisation’s digital presence;

Assist colleagues in the Communications & Outreach Department as part of a team effort to deliver other communications outputs as needed;

Perform additional duties as directed by supervisor as required.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, international relations or related field or equivalent experience. Master’s degree preferred.

At least 5 years experience in social media management, with a focus on strategy development, content creation, and analytics.

Strong understanding of social media platforms, tools, and trends, including but not limited to X/Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Threads, BlueSky and YouTube.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to draft compelling and engaging content for diverse audiences. French is a strong advantage.

Good knowledge of global politics, conflicts and societies.

Analytical mindset, with the ability to interpret metrics to optimise social media performance.

Creative thinking, problem-solving skills, and a passion for innovation in social media.

Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.

Strong interpersonal skills, collaboration abilities, and a positive attitude.

Authorisation to work in Belgium. Crisis Group is unable to sponsor work permits for this role.
