Senior Statistics Assistant

These positions are located in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), Statistics Division (SD), Economic Statistics Branch (ESB), Trade and Industry Statistics Section (TISS). The Senior Statistics Assistants reports to the Chief of Section. The Statistics Division is committed to the advancement of the global statistical system. The Division compiles and disseminates global statistical information, develops standards and norms for statistical activities, and supports countries’ efforts to strengthen their national statistical systems.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Senior Statistics Assistants will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Collects, evaluates, processes, and analyzes statistical data from a variety of sources.
  • Processes, classifies and ensures internal consistency of data; reconciles discrepancies in data series.
  • Builds special data sets for specific research needs or for reports.
  • Prepares charts, graphs and other outputs for reporting and presentation of various data.
  • Applies, tests and executes programs for specific statistical applications on the basis of specifications provided.
  • Assists Statisticians in developing and testing data transformation and validation scripts.
  • Maintains data and metadata in trade data production system .
  • Responds to internal/external requests on questions related to trade statistics.
  • Assists in liaising with United Nations system organizations to obtain necessary statistical and other relevant information.
  • Prepares data sets upon request, responds to queries/requests and maintains/updates web pages.
  • Supervises and guides other general service staff in the function, as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of ten years of experience in statistics, data science, finance, accounting or related area is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to eight years for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher. Experience in SQL, Python or other data science tools is required. Experience with official statistics is desirable. Experience in trade data processing is desirable. Experience in data visualization tools is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
