Senior Water Scientist

Royal Horticultural Society

Overview of the Role:

Are you passionate about optimizing water management within horticulture, with an
evidence-based scientific approach? The RHS, the world’s leading gardening charity, is looking
to recruit a senior water scientist to carry out research on water dynamics within domestic and
public gardens, and to support the development and delivery of the RHS Sustainability Strategy
targets around water and the RHS water roadmap. Water is a critical resource in the
horticultural sector, but changes in climate, with longer periods of hotter drier weather, and
more intense rainfall during periods of wet weather, present significant challenges to
gardeners and industry professionals alike. Domestic and public gardens have an important role
to play in regulating services around water. How water is managed in gardens has an immediate
impact within that space, but also beyond the garden boundary, thereby impacting wider
hydrological processes, with implications for integrated water management.

Applicants for the Senior Water Scientist role should have a PhD in terrestrial hydrology,
water management, or water-related environmental science, or an MSc in one of these disciplines
together with at least 2 years of relevant experience leading water-quantity related projects
in this field, with scientific rigour.
