BACKGROUND: International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in more than 40 countries and 28 U.S. cities, the IRC provides resettlement, education and empowerment support to refugees and displaced people.
SCOPE OF WORK (INTERN): As an intern for the Services for Older Refugees (SOR) program at IRC in New Jersey, you will play a vital role in helping clients access and receive essential public benefits. Your work will be instrumental in ensuring clients can successfully navigate the complex benefits system, which aligns with IRC’s mission of providing support and resources to those in need. This position requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently. Fully Remote.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Client Scheduling and Coordination:
Schedule intake appointments with clients for enrollment in the SOR program
Schedule and coordinate Supplemental Security Income (SSI) phone interviews for clients, ensuring timely follow-up.
Client Assistance and Support:
Contact and assist clients in connecting with public benefits, such as SNAP and ABD healthcare.
Help clients navigate the application process and receive SSI.
Documentation and Case Management:
Work on databases to maintain accurate and up-to-date case notes.
Occasionally complete and submit public benefits applications online for clients.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Develop proficiency in scheduling and coordinating intake appointments and SSI phone interviews for clients, ensuring effective time management and adherence to program timelines.
Gain a comprehensive understanding of various public benefits programs, including SNAP, ABD healthcare, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), to effectively assist clients in navigating and applying for these resources.
Build skills in database management and case documentation, including accurate and timely case note entries and completion of public benefits applications, to support thorough and efficient case management practices.
Minimum Qualifications:REQUIREMENTS:
Educational Background
Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in social work, Human Services, or a related field; relevant experience may be considered in place of a degree.
Technical Expertise and Digital Literacy:
Proficiency in using databases and case management software; experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) is required.
Strong digital literacy skills, including quickly learning new software and technology tools.
Language Proficiency
Proficiency in English is required; additional language skills, particularly in Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Arabic are highly preferred but not required.
Skills and Strengths:
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Attention to detail and accuracy in maintaining case notes and documentation.
