The Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies, at York University invites highly qualified applicants for a Sessional Assistant Professor position in Archaeology. This is a Contractually Limited Appointment (CLA) to the professorial stream for a one-year term to commence July 1, 2025.
The Department of Anthropology https://www.yorku.ca/laps/anth/ is developing a new Archaeology Program focused on preparing students for careers in cultural heritage management (CHM) archaeology. Centered on experiential learning and a curriculum that emphasizes sustainability, ethics, and collaboration with Indigenous and descendant communities, our program will equip students with the skills and critical perspectives essential for modern archaeological practice.
We seek candidates who have a demonstrated record of recent archaeological field experience, preferably in research or cultural heritage management archaeology carried out in close collaboration with Indigenous and/or descendant communities. Preference will be given to candidates whose research focus is on the archaeology of pre- or post-colonial eastern North America, with an emphasis on community-engagement and decolonization of archaeology. The successful candidate will teach a broad range of archaeology courses across undergraduate year levels.
Candidate Qualifications:
Degree: PhD in Archaeology/Anthropology is required.
Scholarship:
• A coherent and well-articulated program of research in archaeology.
• A record or evident promise of generating innovative, substantive, rigorous, and as appropriate, externally funded research and/or research creation.
• A record or evident promise of making influential contributions and demonstrating excellence in the field (e.g., record of publications in peer-reviewed archaeological journals)
Teaching:
• A record or evident promise of excellence in teaching and dedication to students (e.g., teaching dossier). Preference will be given to candidates with experience in experiential education and community engaged learning.
Additional:
• Demonstrated record of recent archeological field experience is preferred.
• The candidate will have in hand or be eligible to receive a Professional Archaeological License in Ontario.
