This course will explore how art, imagination, and craft have intersected in different areas of Italian culture over time. Based on an individual instructor’s area of expertise, themes explored may include studies of the Italian fashion industry, food culture, commercial art, and industrial design. Primary materials will include artworks, literary texts, material objects, and mixed media that demonstrate the importance of design culture in Italy and the impact of Italian design culture in the world. This course includes a component designed to enhance students’ research experience.Prerequisite: 4.0 creditsDistribution Requirements: HumanitiesEstimated course enrolment: 250Estimated TA support: 250 hours
Class schedule: Tuesdays, 2:00 pm — 4:00 pm*Please note, this course is scheduled to be delivered online.Sessional dates of appointment: January 1, 2025 – April 30, 2025Salary (includes vacation pay)Sessional Lecturer I: $9,457.90Sessional Lecturer I, Long Term: $9,930.79Sessional Lecturer II: $10,121.77Sessional Lecturer II, Long Term: $10,326.62Sessional Lecturer III: $10,362.76Sessional Lecturer III, Long Term: $10,570.02Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.Minimum qualifications:

  • A PhD in Italian Studies or equivalent is required.
  • Native or near native proficiency in Italian is required.
  • Background or proven interest in the field.
  • Demonstrable and proven skills in mounting a course in all or one of the fields outlined in the description of the course (fashion industry, food culture, commercial art, and industrial design).
  • Demonstrable and proven skills in managing a large class and a considerable amount of TA hours.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Extended and demonstrated excellence in teaching, and designing, courses in a variety of academic contexts is preferred.
  • Experience in teaching online courses is preferred.
  • Experience in teaching this or similar courses or equivalent is preferred.
  • A complete syllabus or, at the very least, an outline of a syllabus preferred.

Description of duties: Duties include course preparation and delivery of course content; designing and preparing tests, assignments, and exams; marking such assignments, tests, and exams; managing a large number of TA hours and a team of TAs assigned to the course; calculating and submitting grades; holding regular office hours; calling course administrative meetings as required.Application instructions: All individuals interested in this position must submit an updated Curriculum Vitae, evidence of teaching in the relevant area (including student evaluations, if available), and the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 application form (available at ) by email to: and .Closing Date: 11/08/2024, 11:59PM EDT
