Sessional Lecturer – BUSI 3120U – Advanced Taxation (2 sections) – Winter 2025Tracking Code: req1345Faculty of Business and Information TechnologyNumber of Sections: 2Appointment Type: Limited TermSalary Grade: Administered in accordance with the Collective AgreementPosting Date: October 7, 2024Closing Date: November 11, 2024Course Name and Number: BUSI 3120U – Advanced TaxationLocation of classes: North CampusCourse Start Date: January 6, 2025Course End Date: April 25, 2025Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty of Business and IT, the Sessional Lecturer provides instruction to undergraduate students in BUSI 3120U – Advanced Taxation.The current schedule is:Thursdays – 8:10AM – 11:00AMAND/ORThursdays – 6:40pm – 9:30pm(This schedule is subject to changes)Responsibilities/Accountabilities:The primary responsibility of the applicant is to (develop and) teach a theoretically, methodologically sophisticated and relevant course at the university level within the parameters of the course description listed above. In keeping with a technology-enhanced learning environment utilizing laptop computers and wireless connectivity, the Sessional Lecturer will deliver the course using a technology-enhanced learning approach that includes a variety of inclusive teaching and learning strategies and assessments. The Sessional Lecturer will prepare, deliver and grade all course material and assignments and be available for consultation with students during and following completion of the course session.This position falls within the bargaining unit represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and will be subject to the terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the University and PSAC. The collective agreement may be found on the Human Resources section of our website. Candidates will be required to certify that they are currently legally eligible to work in Canada for the duration of the contract.Qualifications:In addition to the Required Education, Required Skills, and Required Experience set out below, the successful candidate will have a proven aptitude for teaching at the undergraduate level, with demonstrated potential for making excellent contributions to teaching.Candidates will be required to certify that they are currently, and will be for the duration of the contract, legally eligible to work in Canada.Note that this course will be delivered in-person at Ontario Tech University’s North Campus in Oshawa, Ontario.Required Education:Candidates must meet at least ONE of the following qualifications:

  • Have a Canadian CPA designation and a Masters or PhD in Accounting with expertise in tax; OR
  • Have a Canadian CPA designation and a Masters or PhD in Business or Business Administration/Management with expertise in tax; OR
  • Have a Canadian CPA designation and a Masters or PhD in in tax; OR
  • Have a Canadian CPA designation with expertise in tax.

Expertise in tax can be reflected by a degree in tax, completion of the CPA In-Depth Tax Program, field experience in tax, and/or experience teaching tax at the university level. Candidates should document the nature of their expertise in tax in their covering letter.Required Skills:

  • The successful candidate will have:
  • Human skills and technical competencies aligned with CPA professional competencies.
  • Familiarity with CPA Competency map expectations for tax.
  • Familiarity with case writing methodology and critical thinking.
  • Ability to introduce technology and data analytics in the context of taxation
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to respond to student enquiries and to grade assignments and exams in a timely manner.
  • High level of comfort with interacting with students and colleagues using online modalities such as Google Meets and Kaltura.
  • Ability to manage a course effectively using a Learning Management System.
  • An ability to develop innovative and inclusive teaching strategies.
  • An ability to communicate effectively in a multicultural and diverse community.

Required Experience

  • Experience teaching in a commerce program at the university level is an asset, particularly in tax courses. Candidates should document their experience in their cover letter and should include course outlines and formal teaching evaluations, if available.
  • Field experience in tax is considered an asset.
