Campus: St. George (Downtown Toronto)Description:Course Number and Title: CRI322H1S: Inequality and Criminal JusticeCourse description:This course provides a historical and socio-legal perspective on the intersection of social inequality, crime, and the criminal justice system. The course is divided into two broad thematic strands and various selected sub-topics exploring the relationship between legal actors who develop and administer law and the legal subjects whose lived experiences are shaped by law. We will analyze the impact of policies, practices, and outcomes within the realm of criminal justice on race, class, gender, and other forms of social inequality. Students will be introduced to a range of practical and theoretical issues associated with state responses to marginalized groups and how these groups perceive and experience crime and the criminal justice system.Estimated course enrolment: 80 studentsEstimated TA support: 140hrsClass Schedule: Thursday 6:00pm – 9:00 pm (In-person)*Please note, the delivery method for this course is currently in-person. Please note that, in keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery method may change as determined by the Faculty or the Department.Sessional dates: Winter 2025 (January 1, 2025 – April 30, 2025)Salary:Sessional Lecturer 1 – $9,457.90Sessional Lecturer 1 Long Term – $9,930.79Sessional Lecturer 2 – $10,121.77Sessional Lecturer 2 Long Term – $10,326.62Sessional Lecturer 3 – $10,362.76Sessional Lecturer 3 Long Term – $10,570.02Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.Minimum qualifications: A master’s degree, J.D./LL.B. Prior experience in criminal law, including subject matter expertise of inequalities in the criminal justice system.Preferred qualifications: PhD is preferred, a doctorate in a relevant discipline; teaching experience at the University level.Description of duties:

  • Develop the course curriculum, including lectures, course reading materials, activities, and assessments.
  • Design, prepare and deliver course content, including conducting lectures or seminars.
  • Develop and administer assignments, tests, and/or examinations.
  • Supervise TA in developing assessments, grading criteria and rubrics.
