Campus: University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC)Description:Course number and title: EEES1118H – Fundamentals of Ecological Modelling – Winter 2025Course description: This graduate course provides an introduction to the rapidly growing field of ecological and environmental modelling. Students will become familiar with most of the basic equations used to represent ecological processes. The course will also provide a comprehensive overview of the population and dynamic biogeochemical models; prey-predator, resource competition and eutrophication models will be used as illustrations. Emphasis will be placed on the rational model development, objective model evaluation and validation, extraction of the optimal complexity from complicated/intertwined ecological processes, explicit acknowledgment of the uncertainty in ecological forecasting and its implications for environmental management.Estimated course enrolment: 24Number of Hours: 0.5 FTESessional dates of appointment: Specific duties will occur between January 1, 2025 and April 30, 2025.Salary: Starting September 1, 2023 the following rates of pay apply for half courses (F or S), inclusive of vacation pay: $9457.89 for a Sessional Lecturer I; $9,930.79 for a Sessional Lecturer I Long Term; $10,151.76 for a Sessional Lecturer II; $10,326.61 for an Sessional Lecturer II Long Term; 10,362.76 Sessional Lecturer III; and $10,570.02 for a Sessional Lecturer III Long Term.Minimum qualifications:PhD and research experience in the area of Ecological Modelling and Freshwater Biology, excellent knowledge of differential equation systems, and good understanding of eutrophication processes and management.Preferred qualifications:Description of duties:Preparation of lectures and labs, lecturing, creation of exams, term tests and assignments, marking and marks management and participation in the instructor/course evaluation process by the students.WINTER TERM COURSE – January through April 2025The course is currently scheduled on Mondays from 10:00-13:00.We can’t adjust the lecture schedule, so please only apply if you are available during the times above.Application Procedures:It is understood that some announcements of vacancies are tentative, pending final course determinations and enrolment;Undergraduate or graduate students and postdoctoral fellows of the University of Toronto are covered by the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 collective agreement rather than the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement; Consequently, they should not apply for positions posted under the Unit 3 collective agreement.All applicants who wish to be considered for a particular position must submit an application form and an updated curriculum vitae (including a valid email address) through the online application system:The University strives to be an equitable and inclusive community and proactively seeks to increase diversity among its community members.
