Campus: University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM)Description: This course is an advanced introduction to the concept and key texts of ‘Black British literature.’ A term arising directly in response to empire and the postcolonial, Black British literature indicates texts written by both African- and South Asian- descended writers from the Caribbean, Africa, and the subcontinent. Focused primarily on the twentieth-century, we will contextualize this literary tradition within wider questions of Britain in the world and how the idea of literary influence is challenged and re-formed. Writers may include: Sam Selvon, Hanif Kureishi, Derek Walcott, Stuart Hall, Buchi Emecheta, Caryl Philips, Zadie Smith, Helen Oyeyemi, and Warsan Shire.Section: LEC0101Day(s): Tuesday, ThursdayTime(s): 1-3, 2-3Estimated Enrolment: 45Est of TA hours: 0Sessional dates of appointment: September 3, 2024 – December 31, 2024Salary

SL3 Long Term – $21,140.03 per full coursePlease note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.Duties: All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; development, admin. and marking of assignments, tests and exams; calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours; supervising any TAs assigned to course, if applicable.Minimum Qualifications: PhD in English with specialization in Black British literature or a related topic; experience teaching Black British literature or related topics at the university level; strong academic record; demonstrated teaching ability; evidence of currency in subject matter.Application Instructions:
