Campus: St. George (Downtown Toronto)Description:Course Number and Title: FAH480H1F Special Topics in the History of Art and Architecture – When you Wish Upon a Star: How Medieval and Renaissance Art Influenced DisneyCourse Description: This course will explore how the visual culture of the medieval and early modern periods influenced and inspired the works of Walt Disney. The kinds of materials examined will include illuminated manuscripts, sculpture, tapestries and architecture from a diverse geographic context: Western Europe, Asia, South Asia, and parts of the Middle East. In addition to visual arts, the course will also draw on elements from other disciplines such as literature and anthropology, as students will be examining fables, legends, myths, and archetypes. Discussions and assignments will focus primarily on how these elements were incorporated by Disney in the creation of some of its most well-known films.Estimated Course Enrolment: 20 studentsEstimated TA Support (based on full course enrolment): N/AClass Schedule: Tuesdays 1:00-3:00 pm (In Person)*Please note, the delivery method for this course is currently In Person. In keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery may change as determined by the Faculty or the Department.Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024; Final Assessment period December 6-21, 2024.Please note: This position includes the completion of any course work and marking not finished by December 31, 2024.Salary:

  • Sessional Lecturer I $9,457.90
  • Sessional Lecturer I – Long Term $9,930.79
  • Sessional Lecturer II $10,121.77
  • Sessional Lecturer II – Long Term $10,326.62
  • Sessional Lecturer III $10,362.76
  • Sessional Lecturer III – Long Term $10,570.02

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.Minimum qualifications:

  • MA in Art History or a related field is required; PhD in Art History is preferred.
  • Teaching and communication skills in the history of art are required.
  • Knowledge of visual culture of the medieval and early modern periods and an understanding of how they influenced the works of Walt Disney are required.
  • At least two years of experience creating and marking undergraduate assignments, exercises, and/or undergraduate essays in art history or a related field.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Previous teaching experience in this or a similar course at the university level.
  • Evidence of recent teaching effectiveness would be a great asset.

Description of duties: All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a University credit course, including: preparing and delivering one 2-hour lecture per week and/or leading classroom discussions during the 2 contact hours each week; developing and publishing the syllabus and marking scheme through Quercus; supervision of teaching assistants; preparing relevant assignments for student assessment, and (if applicable) setting and invigilating term tests and final examination / assignments for student assessment; grading and reporting of final grades; maintaining office hours for academic counseling of students; answer queries by email or appointment.Application Instructions: All individuals interested in this position must submit (1) a curriculum vitae, (2) a proposed syllabus for the course, and (3) the to the Department via the .
