Sessional Lecturer – HIS218H1S Environmental HistoryCourse Description:
A lecture-based course designed to introduce students to key moments and concepts in the field of environmental history since c. 1400. This course will track the reciprocal influence of humans and the non-human world since the so-called “Columbian Exchange,” emphasizing the ways in which the non-human world-from plants, animals, and disease organisms to water, topography, and geography- have shaped human endeavours. At the same time, students will engage with many of the ways in which human beings have shaped the world around us, from empire and colonization, to industrial capitalism, nuclear power, and modern wildlife conservation.Minimum qualifications:
Master of Arts in History or related field required. Mastery of the subject area as related to the course description.Preferred qualifications:
PhD in History preferred. Demonstrated evidence of superior undergraduate teaching.Description of duties:
Developing syllabus; course preparation; teaching one two-hour class weekly, in-person lectures; marking; supervision of TA(s) in accordance with the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 Collective Agreement; conducting scheduled office hours (1 hour/week)Duties of this position shall be performed at the campus on which the position is located.Sessional Dates of Appointment: January 1, 2026 to April 30, 2026Estimated Course Enrolment: 45
