Title and number of the course: LIN211H1S – American Sign Language 1Course description: This course is an introductory language course for students with little or no prior knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL). It provides an immersive introduction to ASL, with a focus on basic vocabulary, grammar, conversation, and appropriate behaviours for everyday interactions in a variety of social situations. The language is taught through various immersive activities, such as lecture/discussion, interactive games, and situational conversations, supplemented with readings and videos. A significant emphasis throughout the course is placed on Deaf culture and issues facing the Deaf community.Estimated TA Support: N/AAn estimate of the course enrolment: 45 undergraduatesHours of Work: 140 hoursClass schedule: Lectures on Tuesday 18:00-20:00 & Thursday 18:00-19:00Sessional dates of appointment: January 1, 2025 – April 30, 2025.

Salary (includes vacation pay):Sessional Lecturers I – $9,457.90Sessional Lecturers I (Long Term) – $9,930.79Sessional Lecturers II – $10,121.77Sessional Lecturers II (Long Term) – $10,326.62Sessional Lecturers III – $10,362.76Sessional Lecturers III (Long Term) – $10,570.02*Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.Minimum Qualifications: The successful candidate will hold ASLTA or ASL Instructor certification (or equivalent) and have knowledge of Deaf culture and/or lived experience with a Deaf community. Documentation of native or near-native fluency in ASL is required; scores should be submitted from an ASL Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) or other assessment conducted by a qualified organization (e.g. the Canadian Cultural Society of the Deaf, Gallaudet University, or the ASLTA). Evidence of prior successful teaching of ASL must be submitted along with the application (teaching evaluations, sample syllabi, etc.).Preferred Qualifications: A Master’s or PhD in a relevant field is preferred. Previous experience working with Teaching Assistants/Graders is desirable. Excellent teaching evaluations and relevant active research are an asset.A brief description of the duties: The Sessional Lecturer position involves the normal duties related to the design, teaching, and timely administration of a university credit course, including but not restricted to (i) preparation and delivery of course content, (ii) development, administration and marking of assignments, tests and exams, (iii) calculation and submission of grades, (iv) holding regular office hours.Application Instructions: All individuals interested in these positions must submit a Curriculum Vitae and the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 application form, available at to .
