The Marketing and Communications department at the UBC Sauder School of Business leads initiatives to build the brand and reputation of the school, both in domestic and global markets, and develops marketing and communication strategies to promote business objectives, including recruitment, student experience, fundraising and alumni and community engagement. Key areas of responsibilities include brand stewardship, school and unit level marketing campaigns, corporate communications, media relations and proactive/reactive issues management.

 

A key member of the UBC Sauder Marketing and Communications department, the Social Media Manager plays a lead role in overseeing the school’s social media presence across the school’s diverse program portfolio. The Social Media Manager acts as the key liaison within the UBC Sauder Marketing and Communications team responsible for driving engagement with prospects, students, alumni and the broader community in a manner that supports the school’s strategic vision and principles.

 

The Social Media Manager provides strategic guidance, planning, and project management, in order to facilitate effective execution of marketing and communications initiatives within the school’s social media channels. They are responsible for managing the social media accounts, overseeing the production of branded content and updates, social media monitoring, and ensuring synergy and linkages between the UBC Sauder website and other social media groups and communities (both internal within UBC Sauder and external). The Social Media Manager is responsible for the planning and development of social media relations programs that support the branding, communications and stakeholder engagement priorities of the UBC Sauder School of Business. With a sound knowledge of social media principles and community building, this role supports the use of social media to drive the school’s business and communication goals and plays a key part in reputation management.

 

The Social Media Manager plays an important role in helping the school achieve its business objectives/results, ensures strategic marketing and communications within our social media channels are aligned with the organization’s brand and effectively implemented, and facilitates sound strategies for stakeholder engagement.

Organizational Status
Reports to the Associate Director, Communication and Media Relations, is a key part of the Communications and Social Media team, and works closely with other staff within UBC Sauder’s Marketing and Communications department as needed.
Work Performed

  • Provides ongoing support to marketing and communications team members on social media planning, strategies, and tactics that help drive their marketing and communications objectives and business development goals.

  • Provides advice and counsel to internal stakeholders on social media planning and strategies to support business objectives and goals.

  • Provides ongoing social media monitoring for the purposes of reputation management, potential issues and overall school reputation.

  • Plans, initiates, and executes paid and organic social media strategies and initiatives within the Marketing and Communications team.

  • Liaises with internal and external content creators e.g., faculty, students, alumni, staff, agency/creative firm and writers to write, edit and facilitate production of social media marketing and communications materials, while working closely with the marketing team to ensure consistency with the brand identity and graphic standards. 

  • Manages execution of social media relations programs and engagement with key stakeholders.

  • Manages all project aspects from start to completion, including requirement gathering, vendor briefing, creative development, coordination, communications, budget, timelines, feedback, and approvals, with thorough attention to workflow efficiency and accuracy.

  • Liaises with external vendors e.g., agency/creative firms, copywriters, photographers and videographers, social media solution providers, etc.

  • Contributes to brand and marketing planning, ensuring social media goals and interests are communicated and integrated into the school’s broader marketing plan.

  • Contributes to the ongoing efforts of the Marketing and Communications department in supporting internal stakeholders’ marketing needs by ensuring available social media resources, guidelines, standards, and protocols are being leveraged and utilized effectively.

  • Stays up to date on new trends in social media and provides ongoing recommendations for new social initiatives and tactics to deliver on social media strategic objectives and goals. 

  • Develops metrics and dashboards and measures ROI for participation in social media sites and for integrating user generated content into branded websites.

  • Provides ongoing recommendations and optimizations to social media content.

  • Identifies new needs as they arise and supports the Associate Director, Communication and Media Relations in implementing new resources, policies, and procedures as they are developed.

  • Oversees the work of Social Media Specialist and student workers.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Decision-making is based on a thorough knowledge of the policies and procedures of the Marketing and Communications unit. The role exercises initiative and judgment in establishing priorities and carrying tasks through to completion, and must demonstrate tact and discretion. The position has dealings with staff, faculty, and students within the school, as well as numerous external audiences. Error in the performance of duties or in the exercise of discretion may result in significant damage to the unit’s and school’s reputation.

Supervision Received
Reports to the Associate Director, Communication and Media Relations.
Supervision Given
Manages and oversees work performed by the Social Media Specialist and provides supervision for student workers.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum five years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in Digital Media, Marketing, Communications, Journalism, English or related field is preferred.

  • Experience in online and social media community development.

  • Demonstrated strong project management skills, exceptional time management and problem-solving skills, as well as a proven track record in delivering result-driven online marketing and communications projects.

  • Experience in developing/delivering online marketing and communications programs focused on enhancing student/customer experience are an asset.

  • Has an understanding and experience in how social media relates to issues management, crisis communications and overall brand guardianship/reputation.

  • Experience working within a complex organizational structure; and understanding of the academic and public sector environment is an asset.

  • Experience managing social media communities with a solid understanding of design, social media content creation, online production, and analytics.

  • A successful track record working with creative service providers, such as agencies, designers, copywriters, photographers, and videographers.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills and a commitment to excellent customer service.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to read and write simplified Chinese is an asset.

  • An aptitude for design and visual aesthetics, and a strong understanding of graphic and online communications design principles.

  • Experience and understanding of Adobe Creative Suite, Sprout Social, Lumen5, Rival IQ, Google Analytics or equivalent tools.

  • Experience managing business accounts on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok.

  • Experience with social media advertising platforms.
