The Senior Manager of Strategic Projects and Partnerships provides leadership, strategic oversight, and overall management of a suite of specialized continuing education offerings in the Faculty of Medicine s Division of Continuing Professional Development (UBC CPD). This includes senior-level oversight of educational programs designed for practicing International Medical Graduates, Midwives, and other specialty groups, as well as programming and research or evaluation activities designed in partnership with other organizations and agencies to understand or promote practice change in specific areas.Key activities include new business development and operational oversight of all aspects of the Strategic Projects and Partnerships portfolio such as developing key performance indicators, financial and program reporting, human resource planning, proposal and grant development, leading committees and working groups, optimizing team performance, ongoing partner communication, and leading research and evaluation activities within the portfolio. The incumbent identifies and leads strategic directions based on ongoing assessment of learning needs.The position oversees approximately 10 staff and works collaboratively with a variety of program partners and interest holders. More broadly the Senior Manager of Strategic Projects and Partnerships is a key member of the UBC CPD leadership team and is expected to participate in wider strategic activities within the Division such as strategic planning, staff training and development, branding and marketing activities, and furthering the Division s mission and vision.Organizational Status
The incumbent reports to the Director, UBC CPD. The incumbent works closely with the Associate Dean and Executive Medical Director, CPD, a team of UBC CPD Portfolio Managers , and multiple Medical Directors and Medical Leads who provide medical oversight to specific initiatives. The incumbent also works with a wide variety of consultants and subject matter experts who develop and deliver curriculum. The incumbent works collaboratively with many other community, provincial, national, and international partners.The incumbent oversees a team of staff and has the latitude to delegate responsibilities and tasks as necessary to meet the goals and objectives of UBC CPD’s educational initiatives.Work Performed
1. Develops plans in support of overall strategic goals related to the design and deployment of provincial CPD programs.
2. Proactively and concurrently oversees curriculum design and implementation of multiple educational programs of considerable size, diversity, complexity, and risk; assumes responsibility for their successful completion.
3. Identifies opportunities for and oversees implementation of needs assessment activities to inform program design and directions.
4. Supports the alignment of CPD and Quality Improvement and demonstrates this commitment through CPD program design, communication with staff and partners, and seeking strategic partnerships with provincial and national organizations with complementary mandates.
5. Develops operating budgets and forecasts; responsible for high level cost control; ensures compliance with UBC and Program Sponsor financial reporting requirements; has signing authority for all activities under the Strategic Projects & Partnerships portfolio.
6. Identifies and mitigates risks or barriers to program implementation and long-term success.
7. Responsible for recruiting and training new staff to ensure efficient and optimal delivery of programs.
8. Collaborates with external partners and UBC Departments to identify opportunities for developing sustainable new programming to address specific learning and practice improvement needs of BC practitioners.
9. Collaborates with new potential partners and writes funding proposals for developing new educational programs.
10. Researches and analyzes appropriate solutions, best practices, and pedagogical applications for new and existing programs.
11. Collaborates with other UBC CPD projects and staff to identify operational alignments that optimize use of resources and reduce silos and/or duplication of activities; makes recommendations to UBC CPD leadership team.
12. Responsible for fulfilling UBC CPD’s mission and vision by actively participating in and playing a leadership role in strategic planning and other high-level leadership activities within the Division.Consequence of Error/Judgement
The incumbent is responsible for ensuring the smooth day-to-day operation of the Strategic Projects and Partnerships portfolio at UBC CPD. The position must exercise considerable judgment and initiative in decision making, including resolving issues not clearly covered by established guidelines. Errors in judgement or failure to work cooperatively with partners will impact program development, reputation, and quality. Lack of tact, diplomacy, or sensitivity when dealing with program partners could potentially result in missed opportunities, damaged relationships, and loss of credibility for UBC CPD. Poor planning could result in loss of time, productivity, and failure to operate the program sustainably or achieve program objectives. Inadequate lack of consultation and planning could adversely affect the viability of the program or compromise program funding.Supervision Received

Excellent communication and problem resolution skills are required for bridging technical, linguistic and cultural differences to give all partners and interest groups the best possible experience. Ability to effectively use technology and collaboration tools at an intermediate level e.g., Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel. MS Sharepoint and Teams. Demonstrated knowledge and expertise of information technologies and communications tools. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to analyze problems, identify key information and issues, and effectively resolve problems. Ability to effectively recruit, train, supervise, and motivate employees. Ability to explain, assign, and monitor work. Ability to manage staff performance by establishing standards and goals, evaluating performance, providing feedback, and taking corrective action. Ability to exercise tact and discretion. Ability to exercise initiative and sound judgment. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment. Availability to work flexible/extended hours to accommodate partner schedules. Ability to determine the nature and urgency of inquiries and issues, and triage appropriately. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
