Sri Lanka Accountability Project – Intern

Expected Duration

        • 3 to 6 months

Duties and Responsibilities

      • Work under the general guidance of the Head of OSLap and in coordination with Project members as required.
      • Support OHCHR’s mission to protect human rights, empower people to realize their rights, and assist those responsible for upholding rights.
      • Conduct desk research on national and international accountability frameworks applicable to Sri Lanka, with a focus on enforced disappearances.
      • Gather and summarize information from UN agencies, NGOs, and academic publications related to accountability in Sri Lanka.
      • Maintain an up-to-date repository of resources, reports, and research materials on human rights violations in Sri Lanka.
      • Support planning and coordination of events and other activities carried out by OSLap.
      • Catalogue information and analyze data.
      • Research and analyze open-source materials.
      • Assist in research on specific areas of core international crimes.
      • Perform other related duties as requested by the supervisor.
      • Demonstrate the ability to interact successfully with individuals from different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, including understanding and tolerance of differing opinions and views.
      • Indicate matriculation status and period of availability in the cover letter.

Qualifications and Special Skills

      • Be a graduate or enrolled in a graduate school programme (Master’s degree or equivalent, or higher) OR a graduate or enrolled in the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent), preferably in law, political science, international relations, social sciences, or a related field.
      • Alternatively, have already graduated with a university degree and be able to commence the internship on the specified date if selected.
      • Professional work experience is not required.

Languages

      • Fluency in English is required.
      • Knowledge of Tamil or Sinhala is an advantage.
      • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Additional Information

      • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
      • Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
      • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
      • Successful candidates should discuss visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.

  • Interns participate in the UN Secretariat internship programme without financial remuneration.
