Our Medicine Division is happy to welcome a Consultant in Stroke Medicine with a passion in providing excellent inpatient and outpatient stroke services across our main acute hospitals. You will join a friendly and supportive team of five Stroke Consultants in the delivery of stroke services across Peterborough City Hospital and Hinchingbrooke Hospital.At North West Anglia, we are committed to fulfilling our vision in being the best at providing outstanding care to our local communities.As our new Stroke Consultant, you will bring specialist knowledge and skills in managing stroke thrombolysis, thrombectomy referrals, TIA clinics, inpatient referrals, ward rounds and MDT as per an internal rota.You must be member of the Royal College of Physicians or have equivalent experience, and be fully registered with the General Medical Council. We will ensure appropriate office accommodation, secretarial and IT.We are passionate about research and innovation, and we work collaboratively with our NHS partners in the region. We offer you a standard 10 PAs with 1:5 weekend work from 9-5pm, but we are open to negotiate the arrangement.Main duties of the jobBy joining our stroke consultant team, you will participate in the delivery of hyper-acute care including thrombolysis, acute care and rehabilitation services.You will provide a stroke consultation and advisory service to medical colleagues in other specialties in the Trust potentially in other locations e.g., City Care Centre, Early Supported Discharge team.In addition to the inpatient stroke services, you will support the delivery of outpatient care to Trust patients with stroke and TIA, and potentially to work with the established consultants to ensure equitable provision of stroke services across the whole of the Trust. This will include collaborative working and mutual cover for annual and study leave.You will provide a medical input and work in conjunction with consultants and nursing colleagues to help develop stroke services for Peterborough & Southwest Lincolnshire. Job responsibilities

  • facilitate provision of stroke services to the population of Greater Peterborough & Southwest Lincolnshire in conjunction with the existing Consultants.
  • It is expected that the post holder will participate fully in future service developments in line with national targets and locally commissioned improvements.
  • To contribute to inpatient stroke service delivery by participation with colleagues in:
  • Hyper-acute care including thrombolysis.
  • Acute care
  • Rehabilitation
  • Provide a stroke consultation and advisory service to medical colleagues in other specialties in the Trust potentially in other locations e.g., City Care Centre, Early Supported Discharge team.
  • Outpatient care of patients in the North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust with stroke and TIA and potentially to work with the established consultants to ensure equitable provision of stroke services across the whole of the Trust. This will include collaborative working and mutual cover for annual and study leave.
  • Provide a medical input and work in conjunction with consultants and nursing colleagues to help develop stroke services for Peterborough & Southwest Lincolnshire. This should integrate multidisciplinary team working and ensuring adherence to principles of clinical governance.
  • To participate actively in both Stroke Service and Trust clinical governance and audit.
  • Undertake continuing medical education.
  • Supervise and train junior medical staff as appropriate.
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as appropriate.
  • Participate in the management of the stroke service.
  • Ensure clinical governance arrangements are sound in respect of the above.
  • In conjunction with the management and clinical colleagues, work to ensure appropriate contracting takes place with the commissioners in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire.

Education and qualifications
Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP or equivalent

Desirable

  • MD/PHD

Research & Audit
Essential

  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
  • Experience of conducting clinical audit

Desirable

  • Experience of conducting research projects
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals

Experience
Essential

  • CCT in General Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Rehabilitation Medicine or Neurology as well as CCT in Stroke Medicine (or within 6 months of the CCTs at the time of interview) or on the Specialist Register in an equivalent specialty
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a wide range of problems in adult medicine including stroke (acute and rehab)
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Stoke subspecialty training certificate or experience in delivering comprehensive stroke care including stroke thrombolysis
  • Ability to participate in the smooth running of stroke medicine services.
  • Ability to participate in and lead a multidisciplinary ream balancing specialty and generalist objectives.
  • Ability to contribute to development and implementation of services
  • Ability to organise and prioritise work effectively
  • Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets

  • Experience in project management
  • Management skills including training in teaching skills

Teaching experience
Essential

  • Experience in supervising trainees
  • Ability to teach clinical skills to students and trainees
