Abaarso School
Abaarso Network operates in Somaliland, the independent but unrecognized country in the Horn of Africa. Somaliand has had peaceful transitions of power in democratically elected governments since it declared independence from Somalia in 1991. However, poverty and unemployment rates are sky-high while life expectancy and school attendance remains low. The Abaarso Network includes three school systems in Somaliland (Somalia): a residential high school known as Abaarso School; Barwaaqo Women’s University, offering a four-year degree in education; and Kaabe Montessori primary schools.
Barwaaqo University is creating life-long careers for women in Somaliland. In a country where female unemployment is well over 80%, our students are highly successful at finding stable, high-paying jobs within 3 months of graduation. Barwaaqo offers degrees in education and communications, filling a crucial gender gap – fewer than 10% of teachers in Somaliland are women.
Teachers in Abaarso Network work hard under difficult conditions. They provide extraordinary opportunities for young women and children to access a world-class education in an otherwise impoverished, underdeveloped setting. Faculty at both Barwaaqo and Abaarso have 18-20 hours per week of classroom teaching, with another 30+ hours of extracurricular responsibilities, including advising, office hours, clubs, sports and administrative duties
