Your application must clearly outline how you meet the requirements, and include all requested documents.The Early Literacy Project Assistant will help the professor with special projects aimed at making early literacy endeavors more accessible.Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide instructions and tutoring to students, which may include explaining and demonstrating concepts and procedures, and clarifying subject areas;
  • Maintain regularly scheduled and posted times to provide consultation and feedback to students on coursework, quality of materials submitted for grading, and other similar matters;
  • Assist in the development or update of tests and/or instructional materials.
  • Deliver portion(s) of a course, or lab sessions, including facilitating discussion of course materials, and present to students in a variety of settings;
  • Grade student work requiring interpretation of assessment criteria vis-à-vis student understanding;
  • Meet with students individually or as a group to resolve course-related problems;
  • Monitor the condition of the learning environment, ensuring that all relevant protocols, such as health and safety are followed;
  • Maintain records; may assist in the reproduction of tests; organize course materials; etc.
  • May provide technical guidance to employees within the Academic Capacity 1 group;
  • May be assigned duties requiring administrator access to the University’s Learning Management system;
  • Attend training related to the assigned duties and responsibilities;
  • May assist with proctoring/invigilating tests, exams and quizzes;
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Normally a graduate, Honours, or an upper-level undergraduate student at the University of Winnipeg.
  • Completion of academic studies and/or a suitable combination of education and experience related to assigned duties.
  • Successful completion of required training.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to present information clearly and professionally.
  • Ability to interact empathetically with a wide variety of students.
  • Ability to provide effective and constructive feedback.
  • Ability to exercise judgement.
  • Ability to meet specified deadlines.
  • Capable of performing the duties as assigned.

Additional Requirements

  • Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • The selected candidate would be required to undertake simple research locating picture book text highlighting themes of interest as well as creating simple video/digital content related to these picture books.
  • Interest in early literacy is strongly preferred.
  • Experience creating videos and digitally accessible content is necessary, though specific software competencies may vary.
  • Positive attitude, willingness to collaborate and think creatively.
  • Students must be approved for the 2024-25 Work-Study program. Students may be eligible for the Work-Study Program if they meet all of the following criteria:

Currently an undergraduate or graduate student (PACE and ELP students are currently ineligible);Enrolled full-time for the current Fall/Winter session (i.e. at least 18 credit hours or 12 credit hours if registered with Accessibility Services);Completed 24 credit hours at an undergraduate level at the University (or equivalent);Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0;Have demonstrated financial need (shortage between your expenses and resources)*; andA Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person or an international student with a valid study permit.*An application is incomplete if you have put zero resources. As a full-time student, you are expected to have some form of funding source.*Your application must include your U of W student number and unofficial WebAdvisor transcript.
