We have more doctorally-prepared faculty members than any other school in the west. If so, this may be the position for you!The Faculty of Nursing is accepting applications for a full-time Career-status Teaching Professor position in the Nurse Practitioner program. We are interested in receiving applications from individuals who have a demonstrated expertise in acute care, maternal child health, community health or mental health. The Faculty encourages applications from Indigenous scholars.A Teaching Professor is an Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) position with a workload of 80% teaching and 20% service. The position will be a career status position with a full-time teaching load of up to 8 courses, dependent on credit load. A Teaching Professor under the Academic Teaching Staff Agreement shall be a scholar who:

  • has teaching and/or teaching-related responsibilities as their primary academic responsibility, which shall involve University credit courses;
  • actively participates in the planning, delivery and evaluation of courses specified in a manner consistent with the curriculum and operational guidelines established by the Faculty of Nursing;
  • shall demonstrate scholarship and remain current and competent in the discipline or profession;
  • shall contribute to service and provide evidence of contributing to the University, Faculty and/or the nursing profession beyond their teaching responsibilities.

Although the teaching priority for this position is in the Nurse Practitioner program, teaching duties may also be assigned in the Undergraduate program.Duties * Actively contributes to the teaching team for the course(s) in their teaching assignment. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Attendance at teaching team meetings;
  • Participation in the development and improvement of course learning evaluation(s) such as:
  • Exams (including the exam blueprints, test items and analysis)
  • Assignments (including assignment descriptions and marking rubrics)
  • Clinical competencies/clinical evaluation tools (as appropriate)
  • Participation in the development and sharing of learning activities;
  • Teaching the course concepts in a manner that ensures the stated learning outcomes and course objectives are met, and are consistent among course sections;
  • Participates in ongoing and end of semester course evaluation and improvement efforts, including contributing to the course report;
  • Engages in peer-to-peer mentorship with other teaching team members such as coaching, teaching observations, sharing resources, best practices and constructive feedback;
  • Assesses Curriculum
  • Ensures curriculum components align with course learning outcomes, and that course concepts and content are delivered effectively.
  • Becoming aware of and ensuring continuity of learning and leveling of curricular concepts between and among courses in the graduate Nurse Practitioner program(s).
  • Supports the learning and progression of students through courses by:
  • Acting as the first line of support for NP students;
  • Fostering safe and supportive learning environments for all students;
  • Developing relationships with students in order to engage in learner-centered teaching approaches;
  • Communicating proactively and connecting students to supports (e.g. FON services, staff, faculty, University resources);
  • Participates in ongoing professional development activities, and curriculum renewal efforts in a manner that demonstrates engagement, collaboration and commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Service contributions may include:
  • Leadership in the development, design, implementation and evaluation of NP curriculum, courses and syllabi;
  • Leadership in the governance of the Faculty and participation in University governance;
  • Leadership responsibilities for professional organizations;
  • Reviewing scholarly works;
  • Contributing to Nurse Practitioner students’ work, e.g. capstone consulting/report evaluation, and mentoring visiting scholars.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current, competent and in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA)
  • Undergraduate degree in Nursing and a Masters degree that qualifies the employee for clinical Nurse Practitioner licensure and practice required
  • Maintains professional competence related to Registered nursing in line with current professional standards (e.g. CRNA NP Standards).
  • Maintains professional competencies related to Nurse Practitioner professional standards, ensuring that they are personally competent for Nurse Practitioner practice within the scope of their NP license.
  • Demonstrated scholarship in teaching and learning
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills (e.g. team building, conflict resolution, advocacy, emotional intelligence & self-awareness).
  • Ability to collaborate and engage in shared decision-making within a team environment.
  • Committed to the creation of safe and supportive learning and working environments.
  • Demonstrates accountability to the teaching team and responsibility for carrying out duties and activities assigned or agreed upon.
  • Demonstrates a solution-focused and strengths-based approach to teamwork and teaching.
  • Ability to effectively use and adapt to teaching, educational and practice technologies. A commitment to learner-centered innovative teaching and learning practices, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Maintains professional competence related to education, teaching and learning practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current, competent and in good standing with the Nurse Practitioner Association of Alberta (NPAA)
  • Knowledge of the Faculty’s commitment to and activities to support access, community and belonging (ACB; this is new University of Alberta language based on strategic renewal with respect to equity, diversity, inclusion and Indigenization).
