The Department of Materials Science and Engineering is one of the leading UK Departments (rated top five in the REF 2014 exercise for research excellence in materials science and engineering). The Department currently has 40 academic staff including 13 Professors, 9 Readers, 6 Senior Lecturers and 9 Lecturers who receive excellent support from 17 technical and 11 secretarial staff funded from a range of sources. There are 65 postdoctoral research staff, 141 research students, and 224 students taking taught MEng and BEng degree programmes.Engineering. The Royce@Sheffield focuses on Advanced Materials Processing. Delivered through two centres – the Royce Discovery Centre (RDC) and the Royce Translational Centre (RTC), these state-of-the-art facilities allow materials discovery, materials manufacturing and prototype production and will act as an open access centre of excellence for the UK.The Senior Engineering Technician will have technical knowledge of materials characterisation and be able to demonstrate extensive practical experience in a range of methods commonly used to characterise metallic, inorganic and/or organic materials. These include, for example; thermal analysis; particle size distribution and surface area analysis of powders; rheology; spectroscopic techniques (such as, I.R and U.V.) and X-ray diffraction. You will have the ability to adapt to new techniques in support of the changing research landscape.You will manage the Materials Characterisation Laboratory, ensuring maintenance and calibration records and all Health & Safety documentation is in place. You will provide advice and guidance on a broad range of technical issues to support characterisation work, and you will manage all external contracts. You will provide training and demonstrations on the operation of technical equipment and safe working practices, maintaining all related documentation.
