Danish Refugee Council (DRC), one of the world’s leading humanitarian NGOs, is currently looking for a mission driven Technical Lead for the platform KoboToolbox (referred to as Kobo). Your work will ensure that we protect the data of the most vulnerable populations we serve.
About the job
Kobo is the primary tool for data collection in DRC and in use in most of the 40+ countries in which DRC operates. To safeguard data, streamline the way we work and benefit from economies of scale, DRC has invested in a dedicated private server solution. The server will be hosted and managed by KoboToolbox. As the Kobo Technical Lead, you will be in charge for the technical setup of Kobo, enabling both DRC and DRC implementing partners, in a way that strengthens data protection and compliance activities. Another important part of the job is spearheading a best practice and a uniform use of Kobo in DRC globally, supporting and training your colleagues. Your main responsibilities include:
Change management of DRC’s Kobo usage
- Create data life cycle management process for Kobo data and automate the process when relevant and possible
- Providing technical support to end-users. This involves assisting users with the IT system itself, configuring kobo on mobile and desktop devices, troubleshooting hardware problems, resolving network connectivity issues, and addressing any other technical concerns to minimize disruptions to productivity.
- Provide support to technical users: Designing forms using XLS and kobo graphical user interfaces and providing guidance on best practices on kobo forms development.
- Establish a network amongst global DRC Kobo-colleagues and other NGOs, building understanding on the use of Kobo
- Facilitate a community of practice around Kobo/Data Collection and work with Kobo to provide capacity building and training to users in DRC country offices.
Establish the technical set-up of Kobo DRC private server:
- Lead the design, development, and implementation of KoboToolbox systems for data collection and analysis.
- Manage the data migration from existing DRC Kobo accounts to the centralized DRC Kobo server
- Design User Access management with a single sign-on solutions enabling both DRC and implementing partners (e.g., local NGO) using Kobo including workflows and automation where possible
- Assisting in creating security policies and procedures, monitoring for security breaches or unauthorized activity, system monitoring, test responsible for major application updates and, in close collaboration with Kobo, schedule regular backups, testing backup procedures and data restore, and ensure SSL certificates are maintained
About you
To be successful in this role we expect you to demonstrate proven experience working with IT projects, good communication skills, and that you are comfortable working with a geographically distributed team. You will be working with both technical and non-technical colleagues and must be able to cope well with both groups. Working in an NGO environment, agile is key and you enjoy working in a lively environment. Moreover, we also expect the following:
- Proven experience as a power Kobo user
- Demonstrated experience with deploying global IT systems
- A Master/bachelor’s degree in social science, computer science, software engineering, or other relevant areas
- Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills
- Fluency in written and spoken English, with French being a strong asset.
Desirable
- Additional languages are an asset: French, Arabic and Spanish are in use in DRC globally
- Experience with hands on Kobo data management insights in the field
- Experience with data collection application
- Experience in XLS form design for Kobo, ODK, and Survey CTO
- Experience in working with end-users to gather and document both functional and technical requirements
- Experience from the development and/or humanitarian sector

- Contract length: Until end of 2024, renewable based on performance and funding.
