About usThe Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences (NMES) is a vibrant faculty, as part of King’s College London, and is based in the heart of London with a long tradition of world-leading research and teaching in physics, mathematics, chemistry, informatics and engineering.About the roleThis role presents an exciting opportunity to act as one of the key liaison points with undergraduate students within the UG laboratories in the Chemistry department, supporting the delivery of undergraduate (UG) Chemistry and Natural Sciences programmes to foundation and undergraduate students in years 1 to 3.Reporting to the Senior Technical Manager at the Waterloo Campus, the Technical Manager (Senior Laboratory Instructor) – one of several roles working as part of a wider Education technical sub-function – supports the Department of Chemistry’s educational activities.This role presents an exciting opportunity to act as one of the key liaison points with undergraduate students within the UG laboratories in the Chemistry department, supporting the delivery of undergraduate (UG) Chemistry and Natural Sciences programmes to foundation and undergraduate students in years 1 to 3.We have two positions vacant for this role to which we can recruit too.The role will include supervising and supporting students in laboratory practical sessions in the UG teaching laboratories, tutorials, workshops, and computer labs, at foundation level and in years 1-3, along with associated assessment and marking.The ideal candidate will have a background in chemistry and comprehensive knowledge and experience in supervising/demonstrating and supporting teaching at undergraduate level in a higher education (HE) teaching environment.Key responsibilities include supervising, demonstrating, and supporting students in laboratory practical sessions, tutorial, workshops and computer labs, at foundation level and in year 1-3 setting, marking, and assessing work and providing feedback to students. Also Developing and delivering training and induction materials for students and staff and develop prepare and deliver taught practical activities in the chemical sciences.Working closely with the technical and academic education team to ensure by design, and via appropriate risk assessments, that all laboratory practical sessions are safe. Preparing and maintaining safety documentation and assisting with the investigation of accidents/incidents/near miss events.Reporting to the Senior Technical Manager at the Waterloo Campus, the Technical Manager (Senior Laboratory Instructor) – one of several roles working as part of a wider Education technical sub-function – supporting the Department of Chemistry’s educational activities.This is a full time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite term contract.About youTo be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience.Essential criteria * Level 6/7 (e.g. BSc/Masters) qualification in a relevant field, (e.g. Chemistry) plus substantial work experience in relevant technical/scientific posts.

  • Experience in supervising/demonstrating students within laboratory practical’s, supporting teaching at undergraduate level in a higher education (HE) teaching environment, with experience in assessing and marking student work.
  • Good working knowledge of regulations and best practice governing teaching laboratories, including Health & Safety and environmental sustainability.
  • Strong written, oral, and IT communication skills, in particular when conveying complex information to a lay/ non-expert audience, along with excellent planning & organisational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of team, with the ability to organise and manage own workload.
  • Ability to train and supervise staff, students, and technical colleagues in the area of responsibility.
  • Evidence of an active commitment to professional development (such as working towards CSci or FHEA/AFHEA)

Desirable criteria * Higher degree/qualification (e.g. PhD) in a related field

  • Experience in delivering chemistry sessions for outreach that prove engaging and inspiring.
  • Experience as a first-encounter responder for UG students, detecting and addressing problems at an early stage.
  • Relevant professional registration
  • Able and willing to provide support beyond core hours, as required e.g. during a weekend open day event.
