Job Purpose

To provide technical assistance and laboratory support to academics, students, researchers and surgical professionals within the Anatomy facility. Work will support the smooth and effective running of mortuary and teaching laboratories to support activities for the School Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Provide technical support to academic and student service users within the Anatomy facility. Contribute to the overall smooth and efficient running of laboratories, including dissecting rooms, to ensure an excellent experience for all service users. This includes, but is not limited to, the set up and take down of teaching sessions and maintenance of donors used in teaching.

2. Carry out a range of technical support activities including the preparation of donations using specialist anatomical equipment, procedures, protocols, and techniques. Contribute to the creation and development of new technical resources and/or ways of working as directed by relevant senior staff. Identify, propose and implement technical solutions to a range of practical problems.

3. Keep clear and accurate records of teaching materials including cataloguing and tracking of specimens for the provision of anatomically appropriate materials. Where relevant, produce concise written summaries for senior staff. Analyse and interpret data using standard procedures and present findings accurately.

4. Contribute to the safe and well-organised functioning of teaching and histology laboratories. Maintain laboratory areas appropriately and identify and rectify any technical faults/problems. Ensure that consumables and equipment are appropriately stocked and maintained, preparing media and samples as required.

5. To provide guidance to service users in the best application and operation of technical resources. Collaborate with senior technicians and academic staff to facilitate teaching requirements and provide anatomical knowledge where appropriate.

6. Keep up to date with advances in Anatomy teaching methods and seek to apply this knowledge to technical activities to further enhance the learning experience.

7. Provide support to the Anatomy museum, including but not limited to, involvement in developing content for temporary displays and facilitating museum visits. Liaise with relevant partners to develop public engagement events and strategies for utilising archival objects and anatomical specimens.

8. Support the Local Safety Co-ordinator in ensuring Health & Safety policy and procedure compliance and keep up to date with any adjustments to health and safety guidance.

Qualifications

Essential:

A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 5 or 6 [National 5 or 6, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 2 or 3] or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.

A2 Detailed technical knowledge of relevant systems, equipment, protocols, processes and procedures.

Desirable:

B1 HNC/HND in Biology is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential:

C1  Demonstrable technical skills and knowledge of both mortuary and histology laboratory procedures and equipment.

C2  Anatomical knowledge and demonstrable experience of ability to evaluate specimens for specific use.

C3  Strong IT skills including both standard and specialist software programmes.

C4  Ability to work effectively with others, including own team and other lab users.

C5  Excellent oral and written communication and exchange of technical information.

C6  Ability to plan and prioritise workload to meet competing demands.

C7  Ability to work independently, including the ability to use initiative and judgement to resolve problems.

C8  Ability to work with dexterity, accuracy and attention to detail.

Experience

Essential

E1  Experience of contributing to the creation or development of technical resources or ways of working.

E2  Experience of planning and organising own workload to meet the needs of service users.

E3  Comfortable working within a human anatomy environment.

E4  Experience developing museum content and facilitating public engagement events.

Desirable:

F1  Training in effective manual handling.

F2  Up to date knowledge of relevant laboratory Health and Safety legislation/policies.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 4, £22,197 – £24,715 per annum pro rata.

This post is part-time (28 hours per week), and open ended.
