This initiative is a special program under the Ontario Human Rights Code.The Faculty of Arts & Science invites applications for a tenure-track position in Humanities and Social Theory at the rank of Assistant Professor. This is a position for an interdisciplinary scholar who integrates a transnational, decolonial analysis into their practice, pedagogy, and course content. This person may specialize in one or more of the following areas: Gender & Sexuality, Disability Culture, Digital Humanities, Postcolonial theory, Sociology, Indigenous studies and Cultural Studies.The position is expected to commence August 1, 2024 and is subject to budgetary approval.This position will be housed in the Liberal Studies area within the Faculty of Arts & Science, which is where all OCAD University students come to find the courses in art and design history, humanities, social science, science, technology and business they need to complement their studio education.The successful candidate for this position will be expected to have relevant post-secondary teaching experience and scholarly expertise in a related area such as humanities, sociology, cultural studies, gender studies, or digital humanities. Digital humanities is a new area of study being established in the Faculty of Arts and Science. A record of publication in a relevant subject discipline is an asset. Prospective candidates do not need to be qualified in all areas and are invited to make a case for an application that incorporates a combination of interdisciplinary areas.SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIESThe successful candidate will:

  • Teach five undergraduate courses per year in the Liberal Studies area within the Faculty of Arts & Science. These courses sit across Humanities, Social theory and Philosophy with a decolonial focus. Course assignment will depend on the candidate’s area of expertise; possible courses include (but are not limited to): HUMN-2003: History of Political Thought; HUMN-4002: Existentialism; Postcolonial Literature; HUMN-2003: Twentieth Century Ideas, HUMN-2007: Computational History & Theory, DIGF-4001 Leadership in Digital Economy, HUMN-2010: Intro to Gender/Sexualities, HUMN-3001: Reading Popular Culture, HUMN-3014: Feminist Theories, HUMN-3016 Extraordinary Bodies, SOSC-2005: Culture and Communication, SOSC-3003: Childhood Families Soc Change, SOSC-3013: Race, Racism, and Media, SOSC-3014: Sociology of the Body, SOSC-2015: Bodies Mattering,.) SOSC-4001: Sociology: Future Perspectives, SOSC-4002: Gender and Social Change (Course descriptions

.) * Participate actively in professional practice, research and/or scholarship within a relevant discipline

  • Participate in the development of the humanities and/or sociology curriculum, policies and promotion; and in Faculty and program meetings and initiatives
  • Provide service to the faculty and University-wide governance system, as well as participate building the University community and promoting the quality of student life and University culture
  • Instructors will be expected to deliver courses in person, as well as have the capacity to deliver courses remotely

QUALIFICATIONS

  • The ideal candidate should have:
  • PhD in a relevant discipline, such as, Humanities, Social theory, Sociology or Gender Studies (or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated ability to teach at the post-secondary level
  • A strong record of research, scholarship and publication.
  • Experience proactively advancing decolonization, diversity and equity, Indigenous knowledges and sustainability in curriculum, teaching, scholarship, and creative/professional activities
  • An aptitude for developing and delivering innovative curriculum
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated collegiality, conflict resolution skills, and sensitivity to the learning needs of students
  • A proven record of promoting respectful and inclusive work and learning environments for students, staff and faculty
  • Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate humanities/social theory/postcolonial/decolonial theory is a strong asset
  • A record of research or professional practice in a relevant area is an asset
  • Interest in and commitment to the arts and arts education would be considered an asset
