Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Ocean Particle Fluxes – F661P

The Department of Oceanography, Faculty of Science, at Dalhousie University is seeking candidates for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in ocean particle fluxes. The Chair will be expected to contribute to the quantitative understanding of the effects of particle fluxes on global element cycles, with a particular focus on the carbon cycle. The research is expected to contribute to 1) reducing uncertainty in the climate carbon budget by quantifying sedimentary carbon fluxes and researching how they are linked to past and projected future climate change; or 2) informing ocean-based climate change mitigation by guiding societal measures to protect and enhance the sedimentary carbon removal potential of key ecosystems. Research focus may include particle fluxes in open ocean or in carbon-rich coastal marine ecosystems, or in other relevant ocean environments.

Dalhousie University commits to achieving inclusive excellence through continually championing equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. In keeping with the principles of employment equity and the CRC program’s equity targets, this position is designated to candidates who self-identify as women or gender minorities AND as racialized persons (including persons of Black/African descent and especially African Nova Scotians). All such qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority. Dalhousie recognizes that candidates may self-identify in more than one equity-deserving group, and in this spirit, encourages applications from persons with disabilities and persons identifying as members of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. (See https://www.dal.ca/dept/vpei/equity-inclusion/employment-equity.html for definitions of the equity-deserving groups).

The CRC program was established by the Canadian Federal Government with the purpose of attracting outstanding researchers to the Canadian university system. Tier 1 Chairs are intended for exceptional scholars acknowledged by their peers as world leaders in their fields. Please contact Dalhousie’s Office of Research Services and see the CRC website (http://www.chairs.gc.ca) for more information on eligibility.

The candidate is expected to be in mid to late career (at the level of Associate or Full professor) and have a strong record in conducting and leading world-class research. In addition to developing an ambitious research program, the Chair is expected to contribute to the supervision of graduate students and the undergraduate and graduate curriculum of the department.
The successful applicant may have access to research support from the Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI). OFI brings together elite researchers and institutes from across the globe to tackle complex ocean challenges. Research is focused on three key areas: achieving net zero, protecting biodiversity, and sustaining bioresources. The OFI was created through an initial $93.7M award (Safe and Sustainable Development of the Ocean Frontier) from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF). Dalhousie was recently awarded an additional $154M CFREF award (Transforming Climate Action (TCA); www.ofi.ca/programs/transform-climate-action) that will be administered by the OFI. The successful applicant will actively engage with the TCA mission and program. In addition, the successful applicant will have access to state-of-the-art laboratory space at Dalhousie University.

Dalhousie University is located in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq. The treaties recognized in this region are those of Peace and Friendship. We also acknowledge the histories, contributions, and legacies of the African Nova Scotian people and communities who have been here for over 400 years.

Dalhousie recognizes that career paths can be diverse and that career interruptions may occur. Applicants are encouraged to include, in their cover letter, an explanation of the impact that any career interruptions may have had on their record of research achievement.

Review of applications will commence on 30 October 2024 and will continue until the position is filled. It is anticipated that the chosen candidate will submit a nomination package to the CRC program by no later than 22 April 2025, and would start the position 1 July 2025. Applications should include a detailed curriculum vitae, a two-page summary of the candidate’s proposed research program, a statement of teaching interests and philosophies, and names of three references. All applications are to be submitted online at: https://dal.peopleadmin.ca/postings/17229.

Please download and complete our CRC self ID form via the link: https://cdn.dal.ca/content/dam/dalhousie/pdf/dept/hr/Employment-Equity/SelfID-External-Questionnaire-CRC-Only.pdf. A complete application package includes this self-id form.
