Danish Refugee Council (DR is a leading protection agency with a mandate to protect, advocate and promote durable solutions for displacement affected populations.
DRC has been operating in Ukraine since 2014, currently DRC employs over 800 staff in Ukraine and will continue significant scaleup in 2024 to implement emergency response in the Protection, Livelihoods, Shelter/NFIs and Humanitarian Disarmament and Peacebuilding (humanitarian mine actiosectors, using direct interventions, support to duty bearers and civil society organizations (CSO, and partnerships with CSOs. DRC will continue and adapt its durable solutions portfolio to the evolving context.
DRC is looking for a Translator to support its humanitarian mine action (HMoperations in Chernihiv Oblast. This position will bridge the communication between the expat Technical Advisor and the Ukrainian HMA staff. The position may also entail providing interpretation during meetings between DRC staff and authorities or mineaffected communities. The Interpreter will also be acting as a driver for the Technical Advisor and frequent travel is expected to DRC’s clearance sites in Chernihiv Oblast.

The overall purpose of this position Translator is to support its humanitarian mine action (HMoperations in Chernihiv Oblast.
Main responsibilities:
- Provide interpretation between DRC national and international staff, as well as international staff and authorities.
- Provide interpretation applying the principles of accuracy, confidentiality, and impartiality at all times.
- Provide clear, understandable, and culturally appropriate translation and interpretation services for persons of concern and the service providers, as required.
- Act in the best interest of the beneficiary. Communicate with beneficiaries in a protective manner ensuring the respect of their rights.
- Actively attend supportive trainings and participate in staff meetings as well as actively participating in skill and knowledge sharing activities with colleagues.
- Perform daytoday administrative tasks as required by the job.
- Translate assessment tools, meeting minutes and other documents from Ukrainian and/or Russian to English and vice versa.
- Participate in trainings and interpret training materials/tools, communications, etc.
- Respond to ad hoc and urgent requests for interpretation upon coordination with the line manager.
- Any other duties as may be assigned by the line manager relevant to the achievement of DRC’s objectives and/or to support implementation of DRC’s activities.
- Ensure the observance of the DRC Code of Conduct throughout activity implementation.
- Ensure transportation of the DRC staff to any location within area of operation in a safe and timely manner.
- Ensure, that vehicle is available for transportation at any time within working hours.
- Fill out the daily driver’s logbook.
- Responsible for the use of the vehicle.
- Perform daily maintenance according to the driver’s manual and report any problems to DRC HDP SupervisorHumanitarian Mine Action.
- Ensure, that vehicle is clean, including engine, body and interior.
- Ensure that the vehicle is equipped in accordance with the driver’s manual at all times.
- Ensure that all passengers have fastened their seat belts while driving, if applicable.
- Ensure vehicle and assets inside the vehicle are secured at all times.
- Shall not transport unauthorized passengers not related to the DRC HDP programs and/or DRC HDP operations, unless approved by line managers.
- Shall arrive for work on time and wearing the DRC HDP uniform.
- Carry out all other duties requested by line managers.
- Respect the speed limits set by DRC HDP (50 km/h in urban areas and 90 km/h outside urban area, however, never faster than road conditions allow.
- Ensure that fuel levels are never less than 1/2, that all vehicles are fitted with one inflated spare tires and that they are always in proper roadworthy condition.
- Respect national traffic regulations.
About you
To be successful in this role you must have:
Experience and technical competencies:
- Minimum 1 year of experience in a similar role, preferably working for an INGO.
- Fluency in local language and good command of Englishboth oral and written.
- Positive ‘cando’ attitude and stress resilience.
- High professional ethics and understanding of the policy of confidentiality.
- Knowledge or previous experience with HMA is desirable but not essential.
- Relevant university degree/Diploma in English, interpretation and technical translation, or equivalent professional qualification.
